Coaching Athletes to Play at the Next Level
The Men's Varsity A Basketball Program is recognized as one of the premier prep school programs in the country. It is an elite team that attracts top student-athletes from all over the country and world. The program aims to develop players and mold them into a tight, cohesive unit. This will prepare them to excel early in their careers at the collegiate level.
Coach Gale emphasizes skill development and playing the "right way." Players are given opportunities to showcase their skills to college coaches, and with the help of the coaching staff, find the appropriate college destination. The Varsity A team also strives to teach student athletes how to be exemplary students and productive members of the New Hampton community.

Andrew Gale
BioHead Coach
Andrew Gale comes from the University of Vermont where he worked for four years as the lead student manager and as the Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men’s Basketball Team. During his time at UVM, the Catamounts won an America East Championship, had the longest winning streak in the country during the 2016-2017 Season, went undefeated in the America East Conference, and earned four post season bids: one to the NCAA Tournament, one to the NIT and two to the CBI. While completing his graduate work, he served as an Academic Advisor by helping players manage their coursework while competing at the Division I level.
Andrew was named Head Coach of the Men’s Varsity A team in May 2019 after 2 seasons as Assistant Coach. During his first year in March 2020, his team beat Brewster Academy in the NEPSAC AAA finals for the schools’ first Championship since 2003. Alex Karaban was named player of the game and has since gone on to win the 2023 NCAA Championship with UCONN.
In March 2023, New Hampton was invited to participate in the National Prep Championship Tournament in Worcester, MA. Coach Gale strives to develop his team to play at their highest level with respect and integrity on and off the court.
Andrew was born and raised in Williston, Vermont. He is a graduate of the University of Vermont with a B.S. in Business Administration and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Andrew is a member of the Admissions Department. He spends his summers golfing and on Lake Champlain in Vermont with his family and friends. -

John Scheinman
BioSpecial Assistant to the Head Coach
John Scheinman brings over 45 years of basketball experience, as a Manager at Marist College, an assistant coach at Keene State College, Farleigh Dickinson University, and Head Coach at Saint Joseph's College, New England College and Plymouth State University. John also is a color analyst for various media platforms including, ESPN+, NBS Sports Boston, NBA TV, & ACC Network.

Huskies Bounce Back
Read MoreNew Hampton had a tough bounce back game waiting for them in Cushing Academy. Cushing beat the Huskies in the NEBL championship game last year and knocked us out in the Elite 8 of the National Championship game.We were a little sloppy with live ball turnovers early and let Cushing run their offense comfortably. We also executed offensively at a high level early, and made great plays for one another. Cushing did go on a 9-0 run and the Huskies used a time out with 3:12 left. New Hampton responded with a 10-0 run to close out the half and found themselves up 1.In the second half, the Huskies executed a great play to get Chad Cook a dunk at the rim and extended their scoring run to 12-0. We started communicating more on the defensive end and forced Cushing into tough shots and limited them to one shot. On offense, we found a rhythm, and made clutch shots late in the shot clock to cap off great possessions. Griffin Sward made a clutch 3, Brandyn Clarke had a huge put back and Trey Jones capitalized on poor baseline defense from Cushing late in the clock. New Hampton was forced to close out the game as they handled a ton of pressure in the full court as Cushing tried to get back into the game. We were able to hold on and came out victorious 74-62. We move to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in NEBL play.The Huskies had balance scoring with 3 players scoring in double digits: Jayden Harrington (17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists), Wesley Waddles (17 points, 5-10 from 3, 5 rebounds, 1 assists) and Chad Cook (16 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist). -
Huskies Drop Back-to-Back
Read MoreNew Hampton came out swinging scoring 7 straight points to start the game and build early confidence. We did a decent job guarding their actions and pushed the tempo in transition. During the middle part of the half though, the wheels came off. We had several defensive breakdowns, leading to wide open 3's (Mt. Zion shot 50% from behind the arc in the first half), and easy points at the rim. Mt. Zion went on a 15-0 run from the 10-6 minute mark. We bounced back a little, but were extremely sloppy offensively, and allowed Mt. Zion to go on another mini run right before the half where they ran out to a 21-point lead.After the half, New Hampton looked like a brand new team, playing inspired and tough. As we exchanged blows, early in the second, we were able to stay afloat and weather the storm. The Huskies then went on a 9-0 run at the 8-minute mark, which closed the deficit to single digits. We found a rhythm offensively and cut their lead to 3 with the ball and under a minute. Unfortunately, we could not quiet dig ourselves out of the first half deficit and fell to Mt. Zion by 5. We head into the break with a 2-3 record.The Huskies had balance scoring with 5 players scoring in double digits: James Sanderson (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), Jayden Harrington (12 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds), Stetson Merritt (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal), Chad Cook (12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), and Edison Onwe (11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist). -
Huskies Lose a Tough One
Read MoreThe Huskies traveled down to New Haven, Connecticut for their first of 2 matchups against top tier out of region teams.New Hampton struggled to find a rhythm at all in the first half. We were lethargic offensively, and showed little discipline on the defensive side of the ball. We had 16 turnovers compared to 20 shot attempts in the first half, allowed 20 free throw attempts and showed little resistance in transition defensively. At half we found ourselves down 15.In the second half, we took better care of the ball (only had 1 turnover) and shot 52% from the floor. We showed much better intensity and fight, but still struggled to keep IMG off the glass and put them on the line far too ofter. In the end, we lost the second half battle by 3, but were much more encouraged by the effort.We were led in scoring by James Sanderson (17 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound), Chad Cook (15 points, 5 rebounds), Edison Onwe (10 points and 8 rebounds) and Wesley Waddles (10 points, 2 rebounds). -
Huskies Move to 1-1 on the Year
Read MoreThe Huskies traveled down to Boston for the NEBL tip-off hosted by the Track at New Balance. We opened with a tough opponent, Putnam Science who is the reigning National Champions.In the first half, the Huskies were loose with the ball and did not execute at a high level. They dug themselves in an early 9-3 hole and were incredibly sloppy on the offensive end. On defense, we did a solid job initally but struggled to cover up the rolls from the bigs and second chance opportunities. Later on in the half when we started to settle in, we got much more comfortable and executed at a higher level, getting ourselves quality shots. We still found ourselves down 9 at half.In the second half, we were far more competitive on the offensive end and were able to push it in transition much more than in the first. We were able to get the game to a 2 possession game around the 6 minute mark, but could not get over the hump. Ultimately, our lack of defensive discipline and rebounding turned us in. Huskies ended up losing 92-80 and moved to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in NEBL play.New Hampton was led in scoring by Jayden Harrington (22 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist), Stetson Merritt (22 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist), James Sanderson (14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists). -
Huskies Win OT Thriller
Read MoreThere was some nerves before the season opener against Darrow. Fredrick Gym was packed and it had some of the best energy we have ever experienced.It was fitting that the first Huskies points came off of a steal and dunk from senior captain Chad Cook. We settled a little bit early on with some tough shots, and we were dealing with some foul trouble early. Ayden Veler provided 3 assists on cruicial possessions and Griffin Sward energized the crowd with 6 points and a charge taken, which helped sparked the Huskies during their lull in the middle part of the first half. The Huskies entered halftime up 5.In the second half, the Huskies jumped out to a 12 point lead with strong offensive execution and by limiting Darrow to tough contested shots and no offensive rebounds. The lead evaporated when we got ice cold from the floor and it translated to really sloppy defensive possessions. At one point, the Huskies were down 7 with under 3 minutes to play. We came up with key stops late, and kept our composure in the heat of the moment. Jayden Harrington made back to back clutch buckets and Edison Onwe made a layup plus the foul to narrow the Darrow lead to 1. After their offensive possession, we found ourselves with the ball down 2 with 15 seconds to go. James Sanderson was fouled shooting a layup with .6 on the clock. James calmly sank both free throws and forced overtime.In Overtime, New Hampton was able to get a dunk and went 10/10 from the free throw line to ice out the game. Tensions got high at the end, but we were able to rally around one another and come away with a huge 100-96 win over a league opponent.The Huskies had balance scoring with 3 players scoring in double digits: Chad Cook (23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Stetson Merritt (32 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists) and James Sanderson (13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists).
