Studio Arts

Live a Purposefully Creative Life

New Hampton School offers studio art courses for beginner, intermediate, and advanced art students. Studio Arts include photography, printmaking, ceramics, environmental art, and more.

All art students participate in student exhibits and have opportunities to submit work for competitions, awards, and scholarships. These include participation in two annual juried exhibits: the Scholastic Art Awards and the Plymouth Friends of the Arts Annual Juried High School Art Show. International Baccalaureate students curate their own exhibit in Galletly Gallery and submit a portfolio and pages of their workbook for assessment.

Behind the Lens

From introductory levels through the intensive International Baccalaureate arts offerings, photography classes provide a range of opportunities for growth at all levels. Coursework is both conceptual and technical, requiring students to apply their knowledge in an expressive nature.

Emphasis in upper-level courses is on alternative processes such as Van Dyke Brown, cyanotype, liquid emulsions, hand coloring, and mixed media presentations.

Outside of the classroom, students can explore photographic opportunities by working on the Belfry, the school yearbook, or work independently to build their portfolio.

Form, Sculpt, and Fire

Have you ever tried your hand at throwing clay? New Hampton School has a dedicated studio for students to learn the art of ceramics. Beginning with the elementary processes of hand-building through pinch pots, and coil and slab construction, progressing to wheel throwing, glaze mixing, and various firing processes, projects focus on both functional and sculptural ceramics.
