On a rainy afternoon at home on Kennedy Field, the New Hampton Men’s Varsity Soccer team faced off against Phillips Exeter Academy. Despite the final result, the team delivered an impressive performance that bodes very well for its future.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that New Hampton came to compete, and we held Phillips Exeter off for an extended period of time during the first half before they scored their first goal, creating some great chances ourselves. Our young squad showed resilience and discipline against a well-organized Exeter side. The defensive line—missing several key players due to injury—was held together by a mix of second- and third-year students, as well as Jackson, a senior, all of whom stepped into unfamiliar roles to fill the gaps left by injury.
Captain Trey was outstanding in goal. His leadership and shot-stopping ability were the backbone of our defensive effort, and he made a series of crucial saves that kept us in the match. Without his stellar performance, the scoreline could have looked very different.
Although the scoreboard wasn’t in our favor, the way we stacked up against a school of Exeter’s caliber was encouraging. Our team’s chemistry is building, and with a core of young, hungry players, there’s a lot to be excited about as the season progresses and the years ahead.
We now shift our focus to this Friday night’s home game under the lights against Cushing Academy on the Kennedy turf field. With continued growth and the return of key players on the horizon, the team is eager to bounce back.
