Monday night brought everything you could want in a fall field hockey game, rowdy fans, a beautiful sunset, and a competitive Lakes Region matchup under the lights. The Huskies delivered, taking down St. Paul’s in an overtime thriller to start their week with a statement win.
Coming off a strong Saturday victory, the Huskies carried their momentum right into the opening whistle. They pressured St. Paul’s immediately, stepping to every ball and adjusting quickly to their opponent’s defensive wall. Just three minutes in, Lanah Quong powered the ball into the offensive circle with a reverse shot that soared toward goal. Lola Gallo was ready, tipping it out of the air and into the net to ignite the Husky sideline. With energy surging, the Huskies kept up their passing and communication, and with under two minutes left in the first quarter, Lily Thomas hustled her way upfield and finished to put the Huskies up 2–0.
St. Paul’s struck back early in the second, capitalizing on a corner to cut the lead in half. The Huskies responded with grit, and in the final seconds of the half earned back-to-back corners. On the second, Ella Fischetti inserted cleanly to Kelsey Baker, whose strong shot was redirected by Emma MacPherson into the back of the net, extending the lead to 3–1 at halftime.
But the visitors weren’t done. St. Paul’s came out firing in the third quarter, scoring quickly before the Huskies answered. MacPherson forced a turnover in the midfield and sent a long ball forward, where Quong outran everyone to tip it home and make it 4–2. St. Paul’s rallied again, however, netting two unanswered goals to even the score 4–4 heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was a battle of willpower, with both teams creating chances but neither breaking through, sending the game to overtime, the Huskies’ first in two seasons. With fans buzzing, both squads traded end-to-end runs and corners in a high-energy 7v7 period. Then, with 3:30 left, Fischetti stepped up in the midfield, broke past a defender, and fed Thomas at the top of the circle. Her shot ricocheted off a St. Paul’s stick right to Quong, who buried the one-timer for the golden goal.
Fans stormed the field, players celebrated with hugs and high fives, and Husky Nation showed its pride after one of the most exciting wins in recent memory. The Huskies now look to carry that momentum into Saturday’s matchup against Proctor.
