New Hampton drops season opener at Vermont Academy

Justin Carey
Despite outhitting Vermont Academy, fielding errors and pitching miscues lead to first loss of the season for the Huskies.
The Huskies traveled to Saxtons River, VT to take on the defending Lakes Region League champion Vermont Academy.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on aggressive hitting by Ollie Quong and Griffin Taylor followed by sacrifice fly balls by Carter Sahagian and Phil Groeling.  Vermont then responded with 2 runs of their own and then jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a 5-run 2nd inning.  New Hampton was able to chip away at the lead and found themselves trailing 8-4 entering the bottom half of the 5th inning.  After a throwing error and three consecutive walks, the Huskies quickly found themselves facing a 10-run mercy rule defeat.

Offensively, the Huskies were sharp all game with runners in scoring position every inning.  A few untimely plays along with some good Vermont defense, held the Huskies to only 4 runs all game despite New Hampton outhitting Vermont 10-9 in the game.  Ollie Quong, Griffin Taylor, Phil Groeling and Joey Krasowski led the Huskies offensively and combined for 9 of their 10 hits.

Despite a solid pitching outing from Carter Sahagian, the Huskies committed 4 errors, walked 3 batters, and hit 3 batters which ultimately proved costly in the 14-4 defeat.

The Huskies look to bounce back on Friday when they host Kimball Union Academy for their first home game of the season.  First pitch is at 5:00 pm at Gnerre Field.
