Huskies Complete Sweep of Newman with a 70-63 Road Win

The Huskies used efficient scoring at all three levels, unselfish ball movement, and pressure defense to complete a sweep of Newman School on Saturday.

Newman was the early aggressor, jumping out to a 7-point lead (5-12), but a New Hampton timeout helped steady the Huskies. Serenity Lancaster sparked the response with a three-point play out of the break. The remainder of the first quarter featured back-and-forth action with both teams answering short scoring runs from the other.

The second quarter was a repeat of the first as Newman built another seven-point advantage, and New Hampton responded once again. A mid-range bucket from Chloe Dix and a triple from Elyse Ngenda trimmed the deficit, while Shannon O’Leary’s presence in the paint and a well-timed offensive charge drawn by Lancaster helped slow Newman’s interior attack. The Huskies pulled within two, 21–23, with 3:39 remaining in the half. A stretch of turnovers allowed Newman to extend the lead, but Dix drilled a three in the closing seconds to cut it to 29–33 heading into the break.

New Hampton regrouped during halftime and came out with renewed energy. Lancaster scored on a bank shot from the block, and Casey Stores knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give the Huskies their first lead of the game, 37–33. Full-court defensive pressure, led by Ava Perry and Abby Schrader, paid dividends. Saige DeJesus provided a spark in transition, pushing the pace and finding open teammates. Lancaster buried a three with just over 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter to put the Huskies ahead for good. Free throws from O’Leary and Dix closed the quarter with New Hampton holding a 52–46 advantage.

The Huskies continued to move the ball in the fourth. Kailey Sullivan connected from behind the arc, Dix found Ngenda for a layup in the paint, and Ngenda returned the favor on the next possession. Newman continued to battle, but New Hampton locked in defensively, turning steals into transition points and building a 10-point cushion with just over three minutes to play. The Huskies managed the clock and converted at the free throw line down the stretch to secure a 70–63 win over a tough Newman squad.

All nine healthy players contributed to the victory. New Hampton shot 60.7% from two, 43.8% from behind the arc, and 83.3% from the free-throw line, with four players scoring in double figures. The Huskies dished 14 assists and limited their turnovers to nine.
