Huskies Drop Close Contest to Tough Winchendon Team

New Hampton Varsity B hit the hardwood Saturday afternoon for their second game of the weekend. Fresh off of a convincing win against Plymouth Regional High School, the Huskies looked to secure back-to-back wins. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be on this day, as uneven three-point shooting and spotty transition defense doomed the Huskies' comeback attempt.
From the outset, Winchendon's physicality hurt New Hampton. After a series of transition buckets and second-chance opportunities from the offensive glass, Winchendon took a 21-10 lead. New Hampton battled back after switching to a zone defense, and the Wapiti led by only 6 at the break.
After trading the first few buckets, New Hampton began a run sparked by tough hoops from Beau Millar and Ryder Brainis. Jasper Bias-Derry grabbed 5 rebounds during a key stretch, and a three-pointer and two foul shots by Jett Sizer put the Huskies up 67-59 with just under 6 minutes to play.
But the lead was not for long. When Bruce Fa fouled out with 5:25 left in the second half, Winchendon went on a run of transition buckets to tie the game. New Hampton missed some close shots at the rim, and Winch was able to convert. When Jasper Bias-Derry fouled out at the 2-minute mark, the Huskies' front line was thin, and Winchendon was able to take advantage.
After some press attempts and a few foul shots, Winchendon secured their lead and ended the game 72-63. Overall, the Huskies played hard against a very talented team, but they will need to bring an A+ effort to beat a team of that caliber, and on this day, the Huskies did not have enough to hold off the Wapiti.
New Hampton now has 6 days until their next game at home against Rectory School on Friday at 5:30 PM in Smith Gymnasium.
