Huskies Open 2025-26 Season with Home Win

Tim Tracy
The new-look Varsity B New Hampton Huskies took to the floor for their home opener Wednesday against a spirited Cardigan Mountain School team. After an opening stanza that saw both teams settle for three-pointers, New Hampton pushed the lead to 24-14 with a series of fast break buckets led by Beau Millar and Bruce Fa. Ryder Brainis and Jett Sizer also added three-pointers, and New Hampton extended the advantage to double digits. Tough buckets by Landon Jones and Ian Monteiro led to a Ryder Brainis buzzer beater to end the first half, and the Huskies went into the break up 42-24.

Out of the half, a quick Beau Millar bucket on the first possession signaled promise for a strong second half, but the defense and rebounding did not hold up. Cardigan Mountain repeatedly got third and fourth opportunities. In addition, their switch to a zone press and half-court trap confused New Hampton, leading to two quick buckets. Near the midway point of the half, New Hampton's lead had shrunk to 46-34.

Despite lapses on the board, New Hampton settled in and handled the zone. A tough putback by Landon Jones and a deep three-pointer pushed the lead back to 19, and the Huskies ended the game 80-64. Incredible effort on the glass and in transition by Cardigan Mountain kept the game close, and the Huskies will need to improve their tenacity as they head into the Thanksgiving break and the meat of a difficult MAISAD and NEPSAC schedule.
