New Hampton came out swinging scoring 7 straight points to start the game and build early confidence. We did a decent job guarding their actions and pushed the tempo in transition. During the middle part of the half though, the wheels came off. We had several defensive breakdowns, leading to wide open 3's (Mt. Zion shot 50% from behind the arc in the first half), and easy points at the rim. Mt. Zion went on a 15-0 run from the 10-6 minute mark. We bounced back a little, but were extremely sloppy offensively, and allowed Mt. Zion to go on another mini run right before the half where they ran out to a 21-point lead.
After the half, New Hampton looked like a brand new team, playing inspired and tough. As we exchanged blows, early in the second, we were able to stay afloat and weather the storm. The Huskies then went on a 9-0 run at the 8-minute mark, which closed the deficit to single digits. We found a rhythm offensively and cut their lead to 3 with the ball and under a minute. Unfortunately, we could not quiet dig ourselves out of the first half deficit and fell to Mt. Zion by 5. We head into the break with a 2-3 record.
The Huskies had balance scoring with 5 players scoring in double digits: James Sanderson (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), Jayden Harrington (12 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds), Stetson Merritt (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal), Chad Cook (12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), and Edison Onwe (11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist).
