Travis Jorgenson '13 Headed to Georgia Tech

Will McCulloch
A year ago it seemed that Travis Jorgenson would play his college basketball in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri. After opening up his recruitment this fall, though, the former University of Missouri commit enjoyed a productive season at New Hampton School, where he transferred to from Rock Bridge High for his final year of high school. Jorgenson signed a letter of intent to attend Georgia Tech on a full basketball scholarship on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's spring signing period. A 6-foot-1 point guard with a deft feel for the game, a consistent three-point shot, and hard-nosed style, Jorgenson will play for Brian Gregory in the Atlantic Coast Conference next season. Jorgenson chose the Yellow Jackets over Creighton and Boston College among other schools.

“They were really honest with me throughout the recruiting process.," said Jorgenson. "We had a lot of good talks and I like where they are headed and the direction Coach Gregory is taking the program."

Jorgenson, who played for Kansas City Pump N Run coach L.J. Goolsby in AAU and New Hampton School Head Coach Pete Hutchins, recognized all the folks who helped him achieve his dream of playing Division I college basketball.

"I'm very thankful for all the people who have helped me," Jorgenson said. "I just want to thank my parents for all they have done. I would not be here without all they have done, and I'm so thankful for them…And I want to thank all my coaches — Coach LJ at KC Pump N Run and Coach Hutchins at New Hampton,  but I can't thank all the coaches I've had enough."

Hutchins, who has coached numerous Division I players in his six years as the Head Coach at New Hampton including 2013 ACC Rookie of the Year Olivier Hanlan, believes Jorgenson is an ideal fit in Georgia Tech, both from an academic and athletic standpoint.

"I'm really excited that Travis chose Georgia Tech. It's a world-renown university with a great basketball tradition," Hutchins said. "We're excited to watch him next year. He was an everyday player for us. He was a phenomenal competitor in practice and games and continues to work hard on his own this spring. It has been a privilege to coach him this year."

Jorgenson, who teamed with McDonald's All-American and Indiana recruit Noah Vonleh this season, was the leading scorer at 13.2 points per game for the Huskies, who advanced to the New England Prep School Athletic Council AAA semifinals. The six-team league is considered the best in the country.

“The competition is amazing," Jorgenson said of the league. "And I it's something I'd never seen before. It was a great experience and I felt like I really grew as a player."

The New Hampton School's basketball program, rich in tradition, was also a springboard for Josh Kroenke, a former Rock Bridge (Columbia, MO)  standout who attended New Hampton for the 1998-99 academic year before matriculating to University of Missouri where he was a captain of the basketball team. Kroenke is currently the President of the Denver Nuggets.

New Hampton also counts a number of Division I coaches among its graduates including Pat Knight (Lamar), Wes Miller (UNC Greensboro), Ed Cooley (Providence), and Cuonzo Martin (Tennessee). Former ACC standouts Darius Songaila (Wake Forest) and Rashad McCants (UNC) also attended New Hampton.
