Gary Margolis ’63 Visits Classes and Addresses Community

Will McCulloch

New Hampton alumnus Gary Margolis, Class of 1963, visited campus Monday, sharing stories and poems with both students and faculty. The Executive Director of Counseling and an Associate Professor of English at Middlebury College since 1972, Gary spent afternoon class periods leading students through not only his own work but the writing of others. From his newly published Below the Falls, his fourth collection of poetry, Gary read selections and prompted students to reflect on their own places and anecdotes.

During the evening Community Meeting, Matt Altieri introduced Mr. Margolis as the after dinner speaker. Gary began by relating his own beginnings at New Hampton as a summer school student under the watchful eye of Headmaster Emeritus T. Holmes “Bud” Moore. With Bud and Jinga Moore in attendance, Gary described how several significant moments in his NHS life – the kind words of a coach, the guidance of supportive teachers, a chance opportunity to help others - led him to poetry.  Gary left the audience with quotations of inspiration and a promise to be an ear for anyone willing to risk.
