Joe Forest, owner of Horton’s Farm in Grantham New Hampshire, is a Hunter/Jumper coach and trainer with a national reputation. The New Hampton Equestrian team enjoys working with Joe to improve their jumping skills. Joe concentrates on perfecting the New Hampton rider’s skills concerning their positions, leads and riding a balanced horse to a fence.
Joe set up three fences parallel with the centerline of the ring. He asked the New Hampton team to ride a serpentine up and down the ring going over trot poles between the fences. The team quickly discovered the need to maintain a sturdy up right position that works to keep their horses straight and balanced throughout the serpentine. After the riders perfected their trot pole serpentine Joe asked them to canter through the serpentine with a change of lead over each pole. The New Hampton team members found this task challenging but worked hard to find success. Once success was found Joe increased the difficulty of the task by adding jumps. Joe’s guidance helped the Equestrian team realize the importance of position, balance and planning ahead to land on the correct lead. The New Hampton Equestrian Team looks forward to working with Joe again in a few weeks.
