New Hampton School held its 184th Commencement on Saturday morning, May 27. One hundred five students earned diplomas, and several were recognized for their special achievements with medals and departmental awards.

Sharing Valedictorian honors were two local boys: Kenneth Stevens Torsey of New Hampton, NH, and Joseph Brandon Piper of Belmont, NH. Kenny was also presented a Faculty Citation of Merit for outstanding achievement and worthiness of recognition with numerous other medals; he was also named the Male Athlete of the Year Award. Joey Piper was honored by the Science Deparment with its departmental medal.

New Hampton School’s highest award, the Meservey Medal, given for outstanding contribution to the academic, co-curricular, and social life of the school, was presented to Owen Marc Laurion of Alton, NH. To earn this award, the recipient has demonstrated excellence in grade point average (weighted and non-weighted), diversity and difficulty of course selection, effort average, depth of commitment to the arts, athletics, student government, and additional activities, as well as social programs such as proctorship, student activities, and clubs.

Allison Swift of Middlebury, VT, was awarded the Intellectual Curiosity Medal, which recognizes that student whose academic interests carry him/her furthest beyond the regularly assigned classroom tasks and whose performance is marked by a true search for knowledge. This recognition honors effort average, number, diversity, and depth of course work, outside academic pursuits beyond the classroom and the regular school year. Alison also earned the Performing Arts Award and the English Department Award.

The Multicultural Diversity Medal is awarded to that student who consistently fosters an understanding, acceptance, and celebration of diversity while encouraging others within and outside his/her cultural grouping to see “different” people as a source of learning in the classroom, in the community, and around the world. Frack Audrey Menghe a Nyam of Yaonde, Cameroon, Africa, is this year’s recipient.

Radar Jones Onguetou, also of Yaonde, Cameroon, Africa, was honored with the Citizenship Medal. This award recognizes unselfishly contributions toward making New Hampton School a more stimulating and productive community. This medal recognizes effort average, depth of commitment to the arts, athletics, student government, jobs, community service, and additional activities and social programs such as proctorship, student activities, White Key, and clubs.

The Academic and Personal Growth Medal was conferred upon Thomas Nathan Tessier of Nashua, NH. The Academic and Personal Growth Medal recognizes improvement in a student’s grade point average, effort average, and level of immersion within school programs over the student’s tenure at New Hampton School. Tommy also earned the World Language Award.

The Visual Arts Award was presented to Sadie Rachel Nash of Plymouth, NH. Diego Alberto Zambrano of Miami, FL, won the History Department Award, while Joo-Hyang Kim of Seoul, Korea, was recognized with the Math Department Award. The Female Athlete of the Year is Cheryl “Lynny” Gonzales of Perkasie, PA.

Retiring faculty member Jacques Finlay delivered the Commencement Address. During his 20 years of sharing his passion for Latin with New Hampton School students, Mr. Finlay also developed and directed the ESL (English as a Second Language) program, and was Co-Director of International Student Programs, creating a home-away-from-home for adolescents from all over the world.
