Lyn O'Callaghan
Congratulations to Student-Citizen of the Week, Jon Lyon. A junior from Ipswich, Massachusetts, Jon is the son of Lawrence and Nancy Lyon.

Jon was nominated by Assistant Athletic Director David Doyle. While volunteering in Community Service at the Food for All non-profit restaurant in Ashland, Jon came to the defense and rescue of a developmentally disabled man who was assaulted by another patron. Jon was commended for risking his personal safety to protect Petey and evict the assailant from the premises.

Outdoor Adventure teachers added that Jon has accepted the responsibility of being a senior leader for the Sophomore Expedition this year. During the Sophomore Expedition, the members of the class are placed in small groups, each led by a New Hampton teacher, a senior student leader, and a professional wilderness instructor, and they backpack for five days in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The experience teaches the foundations of cooperative learning — teamwork, communication, and leadership, and it requires of the leaders prudence and adherence to high safety standards.

Other teachers reported that Jon has applied himself academically and has made an effort to remain on top of his work. He has developed a positive attitude and is making mature choices in his school life. Further, he working out in the Fitness Center and being healthy.

The award for Student-Citizen of the Week was created in 1994 as a way to recognize students who have made an exceptional contribution to the New Hampton School Community during a given week. Each week during a closed meeting of the school’s faculty, the most deserving students are nominated and the actions that have made them worthy of nomination are cited. Other faculty members then add their positive testimony, and the vote determines the winner.
