Although the competition season is barely behind us, next year is fast approaching. Some will be attending summer camps while others are taking a short break and will be preparing for the upcoming season with cross training. This letter should provide you with lots of information to help you in your preparation for the 2005-2006 season.
USSA / FIS NEWS
Jason Guilbert Named Head Coach
Guilly, as he is known by most, has been named Head Coach of the USSA/FIS ski team at the New Hampton School. A 1997 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Guilly enjoyed a successful career as both a junior and collegiate racer. Guilly worked for the Waterville Valley Ski Education Foundation as their FIS women’s coach and business director and for the Franconia Ski Club prior to coaching for New Hampton School for the last two seasons. At New Hampton, Guilly has worked with both the men’s and women’s FIS teams. A resident of Campton, New Hampshire, Jason will be married to Amanda Delio in the fall. All of us wish him the best with his upcoming marriage and new position at New Hampton.
Assisting Guilly as his right hand man will be Jake Manseau. Jake is a graduate of Plymouth State University where he was one of the top slalom skiers in the division. Jake brings coaching experience from the Gunstock Ski Club prior to joining New Hampton last season. In his spare time, Jake continues to race and recently competed in the NASTAR nationals winning the pro division. Bill Cramton will be our JIII coach and coordinate all of our snow sport programs.
NHS Ski Team Graduates
Alex Ray will be off to the University of New Hampshire this fall. Kurt Simard, Head Alpine Coach at UNH, is pleased to have Alex on the team. He feels she will be a big asset to the team and will contribute many points as the women’s team hopes to strengthen its position in the NCAA rankings.
Simon Harwood is going to college at Montana State University this fall. Simon finished his season with some great results and hopes to do some more speed skiing out west.
Jonah Hanowitz has retired from his ski racing career and is heading to Boston to study at Northeastern University. While at NHS, Jonah started with the Prep Team and worked his way up successfully to the USSA program.
Fit Day, September 14, 2005
Wednesday, September 14, 2005, from 5 to 7 p.m., Summit Racing will sponsor the annual Fit Day in the lower gym at NHS. Tim Donahue of Summit Racing will be inviting representatives from Fischer, Dynastar, Salomon, Rossignol, Nordica, Volkl, Tecnica and Marker to be on hand to take orders and answer any questions on the latest race equipment. Tim will have GS suits, helmets, armor, wax and tuning supplies for purchase that evening at substantial savings.
Equipment Needs
The following is a suggested list of equipment needs for skiers in the USSA / FIS program:
Skis 2 pair of slalom skis with plates and bindings
2 pair of giant slalom skis with plates and bindings
1 pair of super G skis with plates and bindings
Please keep in mind that men’s slalom skis must be a minimum of 165cm while women’s slalom skis must be a minimum of 155cm. Giant slalom skis for men must be 180cm while the women’s minimum is 175cm. Both men’s and women’s giant slalom skis must have a minimum 21m turning radius which must be marked on each ski. In the past New Hampton School has had some super G skis for team members to use. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case due to new rules regarding size and shape and the fact that some are old and tired. Super G skis for women must measure 195cm with a turning radius of 33m and for men the skis must be 200cm with a turning radius of 33m. If you choose not to purchase a pair of super G skis, Summit Racing has a limited number they will rent, but it is highly suggested you have your own skis if you intend to do any super G racing.
Boots 1 pair of properly fitted race boots
Your ski boots may be your most important piece of equipment. They should be properly sized and custom fitted by a professionally trained boot fitter. There are lots of good buys out there on boots today, but please consult your coaches before you make a purchase.

Fall Training Camps
Two training camps will be offered over the Thanksgiving vacation period. The traditional trip to Copper Mountain, Colorado, will be available as well as a camp offered locally for those not wishing to be gone from family over the holiday. Both camps will offer free skiing and drill work, but only the Copper camp will offer gate training. More information will be forthcoming as dates and prices are firmed up.

PREP SKI TEAM
The prep team should follow many of the equipment needs for the USSA/FIS team with regards to soft goods. The need for several pairs of skis and an extensively packed tuning box are not necessary. It would be nice to have both a pair of slalom and giant slalom skis if possible. If you buy only one pair, I suggest either a pair of slalom skis or an all mountain ski. You are most welcome to check out new equipment at Fit Day on September 14, 2005, where there will be coaches to assist you in your needs.

RECREATIONAL SKI & SNOWBOARD PROGRAMS
Last year the recreational ski and snowboard programs sold out. It is anticipated that this will be the case again this year, so please get your applications in as soon as they are sent to you if you want to participate. NHS has strong ties to several ski shops and will help you to select the proper equipment for your needs at a great price.
