Huskies Hold on in MAISAD Semis vs. Hyde

Tim Tracy
New Hampton squared off in the MAISAD league semifinals on Thursday against a tough and talented Hyde-Bath team.

From the jump, the Huskies were undersized. In the early stages of the game, the teams traded baskets, with Jett Sizer hitting two clutch three-pointers at a time when New Hampton was having difficulty getting the ball to the paint.

At the 12-minute mark, Bruce Fa picked up his third foul, sending him to the bench for the rest of the first half and exacerbating the size gap. Landon Jones and Charlie Kaikow played quality minutes both defensively and on the glass, but a string of Hyde buckets and a putback basket pushed their lead to 21-15.

At a crucial juncture in the early game, Ryder Brainis drove baseline for a layup that cut the deficit to 4 and gave New Hampton some life. It would turn out to be the spark to a 7-0 New Hampton run, and after a timeout, the lead had swung back in the Huskies favor, 23-21.

But Hyde was not fazed. Despite a New Hampton lead at the half, the visitors passed well through New Hampton's zone and found easy layups, leading to a tie midway through the second. Baskets by Bruce Fa and Jasper Bias-Derry, and continued heroics from Ryder Brainis, kept the Husky lead at 4 as the game entered crunch time.

At that point, Beau Millar stepped in and hit three huge baskets, including a size-up three from the right wing. Jett Sizer and Ryder Brainis had key steals and anchored the top of the zone, and Bruce Fa took a dramatic driving layup to the rim late in the shot clock to keep the New Hampton lead.

In the final minutes, New Hampton hit foul shots, didn't turn the ball over, and walked out of Smith Gymnasium with a hard-earned 56-48 win over a skilled and well-coached Hyde opponent.

In all, it was a team effort, and one that was won with toughness and togetherness. New Hampton now travels to Kents Hill for the rubber match of their series with the league-leading Huskies from up north. The game will take place at Kents Hill at 1 PM on Saturday.
