New Hampton traveled south on Wednesday to take on Bradford Christian Academy.
The game began as a quick, back-and-forth contest, with Bradford pushing New Hampton's defense with one-on-one jump shots and drives. New Hampton settled for threes, but took advantage of a loose Bradford press to find their rhythm. After a bad turnover and runout for Bradford, New Hampton found themselves down in the road.
Beau Millar and Ryder Brainis helped to put the Huskies back in the contest, breaking down defenders off of the dribble and finding Jett Sizer and Bruce Fa for big buckets. The early story of the game was foul trouble for Bradford, with one of their key starters heading to the bench with his third foul with 5 minutes remaining in the half. A tough buzzer-beater 3 from Bradford cut New Hampton's halftime lead to 6, and the Huskies had to hit the locker room to regroup and focus on better execution.
While New Hampton took some control in the second half, Bradford was never out of the game. Time after time, when New Hampton pushed the lead to double digits, Bradford responded with tough buckets. But mounting fouls were too much. Solid bench minutes from Charlie Kaikow and Landon Jones, coupled with timely rebounds from Jasper Bias-Derry and Bruce Fa, kept the lead out of Bradford's reach. Ryder Brainis was nearly perfect from the line in the second half, and Jett Sizer and Beau Millar added more buckets to finish off the late Bradford charge. All in all, this was a tough road test for New Hampton.
The Huskies now turn their attention to next Wednesday's trip to Kents Hill for a rematch with a top MAISAD team.
