New Hampton traveled south on Saturday for a rematch with non-league opponent Winchendon Developmental. After a hard-fought win the night before versus Kents Hill, the Huskies had to dig deep to find the mental and physical energy for another battle.
From the outset, this game was a high-scoring affair. Winchendon made bucket after bucket, whether it was in transition, against the zone, or off of rebounds. Despite Winch's prolific offense, New Hampton battled. Beau Millar, Ryder Brainis, and Bruce Fa all chipped in buckets early, and Jett Sizer set the tone that New Hampton had come to play with a fantastic diving save of a loose ball. Tired or not, the Huskies battled.
After another Winchendon burst, New Hampton found itself down 5 at the half. But they answered the call and immediately tied the game out of the break. Due to fatigue, New Hampton played zone in the second half, and Winchendon was able to drive into the gaps, drawing the bottom defenders for layups and kick-outs. Time after time, New Hampton drew even only to watch Winch go on another run.
But the second half belonged to Ryder Brainis, who scored 25 in the stanza. Everyone on the court contributed, including a timely bucket from Charlie Kaikow and a Nik Hermanns assist for a Ryder Brainis three that brought New Hampton to within 2 late.
Somehow, despite the back-to-back and Winchendon's shooting, New Hampton found itself tied at 82 with 2:05 to play. Unfortunately, the tank was almost empty. New Hampton switched to man-to-man after another Winchendon bucket in transition, but it was too little too late. After a three-point attempt hit the front rim, New Hampton fouled, and Winchendon hit both foul shots. After a tough no-call at the rim, Winch drove home the final bucket as time expired to take a 91-84 win.
Huge credit to both teams for an offensive outpouring. New Hampton moves to 4-4 on the season and takes the court next Wednesday at the Plaistow YMCA to face MAISAD opponent Bradford Christian Academy at 3 PM.
