The latest International Tennis Federation rankings have arrived and in women over 45, our own Veronica Lima-DeAngelis is now the 7th ranked tennis player in the world! Mrs. Lima-DeAngelis is a teacher and tutor at New Hampton, as well as Co-Director of the ESL & International Student Programs. She is also head coach of the men’s varsity tennis team, and teaches instructional tennis. On her own time, she trains rigorously every day for her own competitive tennis career with husband and trainer Michael DeAngelis.
In the past year, Lima-DeAngelis has competed worldwide. Her matches have taken her to France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, England, and Chile. ITF rankings come out quarterly and in the past four quarters, she has moved from 52nd to 27th to 10th and now 7th in the world. We at New Hampton know Veronica’s incredible work ethic and aren’t surprised at her great success in the tennis world over the past year. But Lima-DeAngelis gives much credit to her coaches. She has been working with renowned American coach, Tom Gross, for over a year. Veronica says that Gross has increased the speed of her serve by 20 m.p.h. Gross is also a powerful motivational speaker who has helped Veronica keep a strong positive mental attitude during competition. Lima-DeAngelis also has new Italian coach, Enrico Pellicani. She studied Italian for six months in preparation for her first meeting with this famous coach. She trained with Pellicani on clay courts in Milan for ten days over Thanksgiving break. Veronica says she was stunned when Pellicani showed up for the first practice with six tennis balls is his pockets versus the usual basket of a hundred or more. He said: “If you’re not consistent enough to play for the next few hours with six balls, then you’re not good enough to play with me.” Well, it appears she was, because Pellicani will be coaching her again in Milan for fourteen days in March.
Tennis has always been Veronica’s true passion. She says “It’s brings me joy…it keeps me young!” She cannot imagine how she could keep up the rigorous schedule and energy level required for this level of competition without the enormous support she gets from family and friends here at New Hampton and throughout the world.
Lima-DeAngelis’ next major match will be in Monte Carlo on January 27. We wish her well and thank her for putting New Hampton on the world map!
