Huskies Fight Back, Dominate Second Half in Narrow Loss at Cushing

The Huskies left the warm sun of New Hampshire for a dreary and cold Massachusetts, arriving ready for a competitive game. The team had good energy and a strong warm-up, but the Penguins of Cushing came out fast. Early on, the Huskies seemed a bit tentative, and there was a lack of communication defensively across the field. The Huskies worked to adjust, but the Penguins managed to score first on a rebound, taking a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, the Penguins made a strong run up the field. Although the ball appeared to go out of bounds, the Huskies momentarily paused, and the Penguins capitalized with a quick play, tipping the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead. While it felt like a fluke, the Huskies kept their heads up and continued to play. The Penguins added a third goal from a corner, pushing the score to 3-0.

The Huskies responded quickly. Twenty seconds later, Lanah scored off a fast pass from Lily, narrowing the gap to 3-1. At the end of the first quarter, the Huskies regrouped, focusing on communicating, using the full width of the field, and confidently sending the ball into space.

The second quarter saw the Huskies settle into their game. Five minutes in, a scramble in front of the net allowed Lily to score off a pass from Lola, giving the Huskies momentum. The teams traded opportunities, but three minutes later, the Penguins earned a corner and scored, making it 4-2. At halftime, the Huskies held their heads high, emphasizing the importance of doing the little things right, communicating, making smart passes, and looking up before passing. They knew the game was still within reach.

The third and fourth quarters showed that the Huskies had found their rhythm and were playing their game. The team held the Penguins scoreless throughout the entire second half while creating multiple chances and converting one. Twelve minutes into the third quarter, Emma scored off a pass from Kelsey, bringing the Huskies within one at 4-3. The Huskies played with confidence, patience, and cohesion, proving they could compete with any team when executing their game plan.

Although the Huskies ultimately fell 4-3, the second-half performance highlighted the team’s strength and determination. Coming back from a three-goal deficit and dominating the second half showed patience, grit, and excellent teamwork. The Huskies never gave up, maintained focus, and played excellent field hockey. Losing is never easy, but this performance reinforces that the team is capable, strong, and prepared for big games ahead.

Another testament to the team’s character came after the game when the referees told coach how polite and respectful the players were. Let’s go Huskies! Always forward!
