New Hampton School 8 vs. Phillips Exeter 5

Phillips Exeter Big Red hosted the New Hampton Huskies on Wednesday upon a wind swept Phelps Field. The Big Red (8-3) began the game with confidence after winning their last six straight.

To open the first, the Big Red was able to break into the scoring column. Recovering quickly, the Huskies retaliated with a netting of their own. After almost two clean periods of play, a Husky defensemen was flagged for an unnecessary hit with a fraction of a second left in the half.

With an ample amount of quality opportunities for both teams throughout the first and second, it was soon clear that this contest would be determined by possessions and defensive zone play. Retiring to each teams respected corner, 3-3 was displayed upon the scoreboard at the halftime mark.

Post regroup, the Big Red would be at a man advantage for one minute of play. Just as the Husky penalty was released the Big Red capitalized putting them ahead by one. This one goal bout was far from over. As each team continued to fabricate scoring opportunities, the goal tending game at either end was no less than stellar. Save after save continued to frustrate the two powerful offensive units.  As the game progressed the Big Red displayed their poise at the face-off X, by winning nearly every possession. As well, the Big Red showed great discipline throughout the entire contest by not taking a single penalty. In the end it was the Husky’s transitional game that lead to the overall victory. Two different long poles assisted in an effort for two transitional goals for the Huskies. At the end of play, an 8-5 final left both home and away teams exhausted at Phelps Field.
