The FIS groups of the New Hampton Eastern team were in action all week, as FIS racing kicked off at Whiteface Mountain in New York state and Sugarbush, VT, for the women. The men then traveled to Sunday River, Maine, Feb. 25-26, where Engelken ('11) earned a season-best 2nd place at the final DEVO FIS slalom at Sunday River, Maine Feb. 26. The race featured some of the East's best junior racers, as well as some top-level Canadian racers, and Engelken took advantage of a fortunate bib draw to dominate the field in the first run, winning by nearly a second. Deteriorating snow conditions made surviving the second run running 30th a challenge enough, and Engelken was able to stay upright and earn his first career FIS-race podium. This came on the heels of a solid 10th-place finish the previous day and two top-20 finishes in GS at Whiteface.
Brian Kazar ('10), returning to action after a back injury held him our for a few weeks, skied two very solid races, earning top 20 finishes in each SL with a 16th and 19th, helping his FIS point profile and putting him place to have a solid conclusion to the season. Milos Bohonek ('10) put together two clean runs of slalom in Thursday's race to score a season-best 22nd. He ran into trouble second run on Friday, but still managed to reach the finish in 32nd. Eric Coffin ('10) elected to skip the Sunday River events, but did earn a 30th in GS at Whiteface.
Tulley ('11) had to fight her way from the back of the pack in her first career FIS starts at Sugarbush and earned valuable FIS points with her two tough finishes.
