WELCOME, MENKE FAMILY by Alan B. Crocker, Assistant Headmaster
The Menke family has arrived and has begun to settle in at Smith House, which has been remodeled, repainted, and spruced up for them. We warmly welcome Andrew, Jennifer, Anna, Auden, and Pippi (the dog) to our community.
Our new Headmaster, Andrew Menke, is absorbing as much as he can, and he is beginning to get his bearings around campus. We will be attending a Board of Trustees meeting later this week and then, suddenly, it is August: faculty meetings gear up and, before we know it, another year at NHS will be upon us.
If you have questions about the start of school schedule or about registration, orientation, class schedules, co-curricular activities for the fall trimester, or anything else, call me and I will try and help you or direct you to the person who can give you the proper advice.
I thank you for your support over the course of the 2004-2005 school year and look forward to working with Andrew in the years to come.
A GREETING FROM OUR NEW HEADMASTER by Andrew Menke, Headmaster
Greetings from the new person on campus! My family and I are privileged to finally call New Hampton School our home and, after three weeks of settling into Smith House, we remain grateful to all who have made our transition to New Hampshire so seamless. From students to faculty, current parents and community members, we have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and care extended since the moment we arrived. While I cannot claim to be an expert in the Total Human Development model, if reaching out and support are tenets of the philosophy, then I feel fortunate to be living it this summer!
As you might well imagine, my first few weeks have been filled with listening and learning. I am asking more questions than I am answering and I am learning as much as possible about every facet of New Hampton School. From The Foundations of Learning to how the advising program works, I have had many provocative and productive meetings, all characterized by a willingness to explore that which is in best service to student learning. I am thoroughly impressed with the passion and commitment of the group of adults who call this community home and look forward to working with them side by side to improve all that we do with intention. During our upcoming board meeting, I will review five to eight goals for the upcoming school year. When these objectives are confirmed, I will be pleased to send them along to you for your review and comments. Top on my list will be to prepare for a strategic planning process, in which you will play a substantial role — more later.
I will close this brief communiqué with a heartfelt thanks to Alan Crocker for his terrific leadership and wonderful support. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working side by side with such a committed and talented educator.
I look forward to seeing you soon. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at anytime with questions or comments: amenke@newhampton.org or 603-677-3426. I wish you relaxing days and much time with family for the remainder of the summer.
A FEW SUMMER PROJECTS
Moore House has a new porch roof; Hill House and the Ski Center have a new roof and windows, and siding is being installed as I write. The Ski Center will have all-new tuning tables before the end of the summer as well. New ventilation and floors have been installed in the hockey rink locker rooms. Gordon House has a new roof, and the Ebbels House faculty apartment is getting a new bathroom.
A new third base dugout is being built next to the newly renovated softball diamond, the other three dugouts are being spruced up, and the backstop at the baseball field is being enlarged. The new kiln house is up, and the kiln is in it; also, a new electric kiln has been ordered for the pottery studio in Lane Hall and will soon be installed. Our new fleet of mini buses arrives in just another week or two, so you’ll see eight new GMC buses rolling along the roads before long.
SUMMER CAMPS
The campus is alive with activity. The first of two sessions of Wildcat Soccer Camp is spread out on all of the fields, and our Nothing But NET Basketball camp is in full gear; a second Nothing But NET Basketball camp, this one for girls, will be held next week and a third, for boys, the week thereafter. The STX Field Hockey camp and the three-week, intensive Performance Plus Program concluded last weekend. USA Soccer will be here for two sessions in August. NHS Baseball Camp is complete and NHS Football Preseason Camp will begin August 14.
Should you need information about any of our summer programs, contact Morgan Murphy at

Cara Parker will not be a member of the faculty at NHS for 2005-2006 as she has taken a position as an Elementary Library and Media Specialist, working at the New Hampton Community School and Danbury Elementary. Cara will still be on campus, as she, Derek, and sons have moved to Russell House, where they will be dorm parents.
LOOKING TOWARD THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Welcome to our new students and their families! During the summer, you will be receiving a phone call from a current NHS parent who has volunteered to be your resource for any questions or concerns you may have regarding registration, housing, what to bring to campus, etc. This caller will also be able to discuss with you some of the upcoming school events including Grandparents’ Weekend, September 23-24, and Parents’ Weekend, October 20-22.
Grandparents will receive an invitation and schedule for their special September weekend during the first week of August. Parents will receive a copy of the Grandparents’ Weekend schedule and a tentative Parents’ Weekend schedule by late August. Both schedules will be accessible on our website very soon. Questions about either weekend may be directed to Cindy Buck, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations, 603-677-3414, e-mail cbuck@newhampton.org.
