Class of 2006 News

Prior to leaving for the summer, all members of the Class of 2006 should have met with the College Advising Office staff. The College Advising Office will remain operational over the summer for any advice as juniors embark on visits to college campuses and/or conducting admission interviews. Both student and parent questionnaires should have been completed and on file in the College Advising Office. If these important pieces have not been turned in, please send immediately or download the forms from the College Advising section of our website at http://www.newhampton.org/programs/advise.

Most juniors took the May 7th SAT and should look toward taking one additional SAT and/or ACT in the fall. Register for fall test dates online this summer. The Common Application will also become available online in July at commonapp.org. Class of 2006 should be working on essays and applications over the summer. Questions? Call me in the College Advising Office at (603) 677-3420 or Sally Plyler at (603) 677-3421.

An Exciting Week Ahead

The last week of school is a busy and exciting week for everyone here on campus. While it is considered "finals week," there is a lot more going on than exams.

The week starts off on Sunday with the sophomore class heading out on a four-day backpacking expedition in the White Mountains, returning to campus midday on Thursday. Meanwhile, in Thornton, alumni, parents, faculty, and some students take to the links of Owl’s Nest Golf Club to play in the fifth annual NHS Golf Classic; the proceeds from this tournament and auction benefit our students.

Seniors begin their exam period on Monday and finish their finals on Wednesday morning. Following their last exam, "Senior Week" officially begins with Graduation rehearsal, followed by the fun-loving and crowd-pleasing "Senior Skit" performances, a cookout at our house, and a senior class movie night. After breakfast on Thursday, the Class of 2005 heads out for a day at Cedardale Health and Fitness, where they can enjoy pools, hot tubs, tennis courts, volleyball, softball, and other outdoor recreation. Thursday evening the seniors will have a night in the city; they’ll be treated to a show and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.

On Friday, the underclassmen complete their finals and other academic requirements for the year and head out on class trips for the day. The freshmen and juniors enjoy one last day of fun together off campus, while the sophomores finish up their expedition experience. The seniors are guests at a gala Senior Brunch, then rehearse for Graduation, and spend the afternoon together.

Friday evening begins with the dedication of the Senior Sitting Area in front of the Crum Campus Center, a Senior Dinner for the class and their families, a separate pizza party for underclassmen, and Baccalaureate awards ceremony for all classes and their families. After Baccalaureate, underclassmen enjoy a special party on campus, put on by the Student Activities Office, while seniors are whisked away to a required all-night "magical mystery tour" at an undisclosed location, accompanied by several faculty chaperones. The seniors return early Saturday morning for Graduation exercises and lunch by the pond.

Baccalaureate and Graduation exercises will be videotaped by Crofton Marshall. Parents wishing to order copies of the videotape may do so by mailing a check or money order for $30 ($40 for international addresses) made out to Marshall Media to Marshall Media, PO Box 223, Sandwich, NH 03227 (Phone 603-284-7097). Prom 2005

On May 7, 2005, 85 students and eight faculty members traveled to The Grand Summit Resort in Bartlett, N.H. for the Prom, an eagerly anticipated evening of dinner and dancing.

Before the group departed for the Prom, they attended an NHS-hosted “mocktail hour” on campus during which parents, fellow students, faculty and staff were invited to see and photograph prom-goers dressed in their formal attire. This hour was a huge success and is sure to be a part of the NHS prom tradition for years to come.

In a flurry of beautiful gowns and stylish tuxedos, students entered their vehicles: everything from the NHS bus, chauffeured by Don, to a Lexus and a Stretch Hummer. Upon arrival at The Grand Summit, dinner was served and dancing followed. The dancing was high energy, involving lots of “competitions,” where the more experienced dancers tried desperately to teach less experienced the latest moves. Students voted on a Queen’s Court of Kayleigh Scannell and Lauren Polinsky and the 2005 Prom Queen and King were Marisol Vincent and Will Costello. After hours of dancing, at 12:30 a.m. students were treated to a feast of snacks, donated by thoughtful parents. At the post-prom party, students enjoyed hanging out with their friends, talking, watching movies, or playing card games until the wee hours.

The evening was a huge success. Many thanks are due to Erica Wilson for organizing this annual event and to the many parents and faculty members who helped to make this year’s prom a safe and fun-filled event.

NHS on Broadway

The Festival On Golden Pond, based at New Hampton School, regularly hosts the Playmakers Workshop on campus, but recently they held their meeting on Broadway in New York City. Ernest Thompson, Academy Award winning author of the play and the film, instructs the Playmakers Workshop at NHS and suggested that the group go to New York to see a revival of his play on Broadway starring James Earl Jones and Leslie Uggams.

Off we went with 30+ students and area residents to see the May 1st performance of the new “On Golden Pond” and, if you can believe it, to have an official meeting of the Playmakers Workshop on stage at the Cort Theatre on 48th and Broadway with the entire cast. Having Ernest, James Earl Jones, and Leslie Uggams, and the rest of the cast offer personal advice to all of us as we reflect on our own theatre endeavors was far more than any of us could have hoped for. In short, the entire trip was amazing. We want to thank Morgan and Lori Murphy for arranging the trip, with help from Ernest, of course.

Check it out. It's a great show. Go to www.goldenpondonbroadway.com

Destination Vail 2006

Wow! June 2005 and we are already filling the VAIL06 trip. The 50 of us who go to Vail over the Mid-Winter Holiday have a great time. Pete Seibert, NHS class of 1943, was the founder of Vail. During June the VAIL06 mailing will be sent home and, by mid-July, I'll be telling folks our spaces are filled.

The trip departs from NHS at 5 a.m. on Thursday, the 26th of January, and returns late on Tuesday, the 31st. The price of the trip is all-inclusive, from food at the airport to a 5x7 race photo, to a VAIL06 race jacket, and a ski pass good at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breckenridge. Contact me if you want to reserve a spot. Otherwise, pay attention to your June mail and THINK SNOW, at least in the Rockies.

New Hires

Starting in the fall of 2005, Zana Previti will join the New Hampton School community as English Teacher, Field Hockey coach, and dorm parent. Zana graduates from Wellesley College this month. While at Wellesley, Zana played Varsity Field Hockey and was named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad for both the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Additionally, Zana has extensive experience tutoring high school and college students. A 2001 graduate of Cushing Academy, Zana is excited to return to the boarding school environment.

John Cullinan will rejoin the New Hampton School community as the History Department Head. John taught at New Hampton for seven years, at Plymouth Regional High School for one year, and, for the past three years, John has taught history at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. While at Kingswood, John was the faculty advisor to the Youth in Government Club as well as Model Congress. He earned both his B.A. in Political Science and his M.Ed. in Secondary Education from UNH. He will live in Rice House with his wife, Britney, and their two-year old son, Carrigan. Britney is the Registrar at Holderness School.

Kristen Reimold will join the New Hampton School community to teach English and coach Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Kristen is currently teaching at Derryfield and has worked at both Cushing and Tabor. Kristen earned her B.A. in English from Boston College and her Ed.M. from Harvard in Adolescent Risk and Prevention. While at B.C., Kristen was Co-Captain of the Varsity Field Hockey team. She, her husband, Ray, and her son, Jamie (9 months), will live in Rice.

Forest Reid will assume the responsibilities of Math Department Head. Forest has been teaching all levels of math, from advanced algebra through AP Calculus at Burke Mountain Academy. Prior to working at Burke, Forest was a Rhode Island Space Grant Fellow through a partnership between NASA and Brown University. Forest earned his B.S. in Astrophysics from Tufts University and his Sc.M. in Physics from Brown University. Forest also coached cycling at Tufts, Brown and Burke. He and his wife, Sarah, will live on campus.

Jason Guilbert has accepted my offer to assume the duties of Head Coach of our USSA Ski Program. Guilly has been one of our top coaches for a number of years, and the timing is right for him to tackle this challenging opportunity. Bill Cramton, our Head USSA Coach for 2004-2005, remains on our coaching staff and will be overseeing our "on snow" programs as well as continuing to coach golf and do residential duty. The USSA program, along with all of our "on snow" programs, will continue to develop and I look for many changes as we approach the 2005-2006 season. I'll keep you posted as they develop.

I am pleased to announce that David Doyle has accepted the position of Assistant Director of Athletics. Dave and colleague Sarah McShane did a wonderful job during the winter trimester in similar roles within the Athletic Department. Besides helping Athletic Director Jamie Arsenault, this new position should help Assistant Athletic Director Terry Simkunas with many of her current duties. Dave will continue to shoulder his other duties and responsibilities in all areas of school. I congratulate David for stepping up to this newly created opportunity for NHS.
