Katelyn Karkos of Reading, Massachusetts, has been named New Hampton School’s Student Citizen of the Week. Katelyn is the daughter of Stephen and Brenda Karkos.
The award for Student Citizen of the Week was created in 1994 as a way to recognize students who have made an exceptional contribution to the New Hampton School Community during a given week. Each week during a closed meeting of the school’s faculty, the most deserving students are nominated and the actions that have made them worthy of nomination are cited. Other faculty members then add their positive testimony, and a vote is taken.
A junior in her third year at New Hampton School, Katelyn was nominated by teacher David Doyle. “Katelyn is very responsible, always on task,” he said. As a Student Activities Coordinator, Mr. Doyle oversees Katelyn’s work as Events Manager. “She is extremely capable and conscientious in scheduling students for events and activities, and she takes responsibility for follow-up and makes sure there are no loose ends.”
Teacher-coach Sarah McShane, who has been working alongside Katelyn on a project to organize and expand the school’s sports archives, added that Katelyn had volunteered her precious free time to promote the upcoming Girls In Sports Day at area schools.
Athletic Trainer Adam Tyson noted Katelyn’s willingness to help. “She is a self-motivated young woman who is always dependable. In addition to her responsibilities as event manager, she can be relied upon for all types of errands for the training room staff, and she often anticipates needs and acts to fill them.”
Her advisor, Christine Tetrault, remarked upon Katelyn’s growing maturity and self-assurance. She also noted her sensitivity to others. “I was having a down day,” Ms. Tetrault explained, “and when I returned to my apartment after classes, I discovered that not only had Katelyn left me a cheerful card and brownies, she had cleaned my apartment!”
English teacher Erica Wilson, who is the coordinator for the school’s annual Habitat for Humanity effort in which Katelyn is a contributor, related a recent incident where Katelyn was observed mentoring a close friend whom she believed was making a bad choice. In a very animated exchange, Katelyn at once conveyed her regard for the friendship, grave concern for her friend’s happiness, and willingness to help her friend toward a better decision.
“Katelyn has been wonderful in the dorm. Although she’s not a proctor, she is definitely a leader in the dorm,” added Lindsay Residence director Lara Arsenault. “She has great spirit and energy.”
An Honor Roll student, Katelyn's courseload includes four honors level classes, an Advanced Placement English class, and she is studying music.
