New Hampton Takes Down Worcester Academy
NEW HAMPTON, NH -
What an atmosphere Saturday afternoon! The Frederick Smith Gymnasium was packed, full of energy and ready to support their Women's basketball team. Tahlia Pena was first to put the Huskies on the board with an aggressive drive to the basket. MacDonald made a strong presence in the paint, forcing her matchup to take tough fade-away shots. First quarter tied 13 - 13.
Another strong drive by Tahlia to start the second quarter, putting the Huskies up by two. While New Hampton kept scoring, so did Worcester. Mancini continued to attack the basket, forcing Worcester's point guard to foul. Greenwood and MacDonald dominated the boards, helping our guards push out in transition. Half time, New Hampton down by one. 27 - 28.
Third quarter, Worcester went on an 8 - 0 run. New Hampton responds well after a timeout... three possessions in a row --THREE POINT PLAYS. MacDonald draws an and-one foul, then Mancini and Grant hit deep threes to stop WA's run.
Fourth quarter. New Hampton trails 43 - 46. [The entire student body section on their feet!] Mancini responds to Worcester's three-point play to start the fourth by knocking down another deep three. Mancini quickly runs back on defense, to then take a charge against Worcester's point guard; HUGE momentum changer! Greenwood and Pena continued to attack the offensive boards, giving New Hampton multiple second chance opportunities. Fitzpatrick was vital coming off the bench, playing aggressive defense and disrupting WA's offensive flow in the fourth.
Three minutes to go, the Huskies forced some turnovers in the backcourt, leading to easy layups. Greenwood once again, helps the team with another opportunity to score. With about 90 seconds left, Grant makes a HUGE boxout after a forced shot by WA, giving possession to the Huskies. Up by two, Cate MacDonald CALLS GAME, knocking down a three pointer with a minute left. New Hampton plays discipline defense to close out the win.
Final score 62 - 59.
