Northcott Nabs Late Winner in Closing Minutes

Junior midfielder Ethan Northcott's thunderous header in the 88th minute lifts Huskies past Proctor.
On a wild day in Andover, NH, New Hampton battled to the last second against Lakes Region rival Proctor Academy. It was an afternoon that brough fierce wind and torrential rain in the first half, only to open up into sunny skies with a light breeze in the second. Both teams had solid spells of possession and several good scoring chances throughout the match. Proctor put a low drive off the post halfway through the opening frame. The Huskies came close when senior captain Devon Garrett blasted a 25-yard free kick inches wide of the post as the Hornets keeper looked on. The second half saw play open up and relentless action up and down the field. A Proctor attack around the 70th minute led to several quick shots, but the backline was able to block each attempt until junior netminder Connor Campbell-Diehl dove out to the corner of the 6-yard box to snag the ball from a cluster of legs. Campbell-Diehl would finish the day with 12 saves to earn the shutout.

With the clock stopped at 2:00 and the game winding down, New Hampton drew a corner kick on the left side. Senior captain Caleb Duggan stepped up to the ball and knocked a deep drive across the box, floating past the far post towards a looming Ethan Northcott. With 18 players clammering in the box, the ball flew over the crowd to Northcott who was waiting 15 yards out, off the corner of the 6-yard box. He cut towards the top of the box, meeting the ball in stride, and sent it ripping back across the net. As the Proctor keeper scrambled to get into position, he could only watch as the ball rocketed into the upper 90.

The Huskies held on for the closing 90 seconds as Proctor threw everyone forward looking for the equalizer. The junior backline of Thomas Prentice, Jack Wolf, Will Wood, and Juan Carlos Hernandez all put forth stellar performances to earn the 6th clean sheet of the season as New Hampton improves to 8-2.

The Huskies face their biggest challenge of the year with a huge Lakes Region match up against KUA on October 20th at Kennedy Field.
