Huskies get on the board, but fall short

In a sloppy and soggy rematch against the Cardigan Cougars, your New Hampton JV lacrosse team looked to avenge an earlier shut out by the supremely talented squad. With fierce and driving rains earlier in the day, the field was soft at best with standing puddles at it's worst. Nevertheless, our intrepid band took to the field ready to put our skills to the test and from the first whistle, proved to be a different team than had hosted Cardigan only a short time before.
With quality possessions by both teams in the first quarter, it was apparent that todays game would be slower with the slick and slippery grass. The Husky defense proved up to the task of finding their footing and with a penalty free first quarter, we went into the first break down 2-0. While not scoring a goal is not something to be celebrated, this showed a dramatic improvement from our first game and kept momentum balanced. In the second half, Cardigan made some adjustments that put points on the board for them but Ian '20 ran our clears effectively and helped push the ball to our offensive zone in transition. Individuals stepped up all over the field and positive steps were taken by Malcolm '20 and Jack '21 as they showed poise and confidence.
A big focus this game was getting shots close in on the net and T.J. '21 and Seth '19 both used physcallity and speed to do this. They generated great opportunities by using their feet to create space and put the ball in the net. While they took some big hits in the process, it's the type of thing that we've been working on in practice. Our final goal came off of a beautiful move by Gray '20. With a quick misdirect, he slipped past the defender and buried a shot in the back of the net. We certainly hope to see more of these moves from all three in the future.
Lots of good things happened in this game and only James '20 and Kyle '20 took some dives into big puddles. Not the result we wanted, but a big improvement and a growth opportunity as we head into a game with Gould Academy on Wednesday.
