Huskies Open Tournament With Tie Against Rivers

The New Hampton Huskies had little time to prepare for the Belmont Hill Tournament coming off of the holiday break. New Hampton was able to practice one time, yesterday, before facing-off against the #2 ranked team in all of Prep School, Rivers School, this afternoon. The time-off did not seem to affect the Huskies, as Bradley Shaw deflected James Hatzepetros’s shot past the Rivers goaltender, just over a minute into the game giving New Hampton the early lead. For the next thirteen minutes, the game was played at a furious pace with both teams working hard and creating chances, but unable to score. Thirty seconds remaining in the period, a Rivers point shot led to a mad scramble in front of the New Hampton goal. During the scramble, a Rivers player was able to find the puck and score the tying goal before the end of the period. The high-speed pace of the first period continued into the second period. Both teams were playing extremely hard, making plays and playing good defense. Just over ten minutes into the period, Bradley Shaw was set up for his second goal of the game by Thomas Albert and Lynden Breen to give the New Hampton their second lead of the game. The Huskies lead did not last long as Rivers was able to score just over two minutes later, with less than a minute remaining in the period. Both teams were playing great hockey, tied at two goals, heading into the third period. The third period did not disappoint, the speed and intensity picked up another notch. Eleven minutes through the period, the Huskies took a penalty that put Rivers on the power play. A minute into the power play, Rivers scored to take their first lead of the game. The Rivers goal did not phase New Hampton, as Michael Kane scored a goal on the ensuring faceoff, after being set up by Alec Grace and Lukas Uhler. In the final two and half minutes, both New Hampton and Rivers had chances to win the game, but Matt Sayles and the Rivers goaltender stopped anything that came their way. Due to there being no overtime, the game ended in a tie. Matt Sayles played solid in net stopping 33 of the 36 shots he faced. A solid start to the tournament, the Huskies will look to continue their strong play as they take on Nichols School tomorrow morning.
