The Huskies Season Comes To an End

Matt Belmonte
With a narrow window of dry weather, the Huskies managed to get in their final match of the season against The Governors School at Laconia CC. The teams captains Mark and Jack, along with fellow senior Grady, were unable to play in today’s match due to senior activities on campus. Two other players were unable to play as well, so a call was made to former team member Johnny Niemela to see if he could take a spot in the roster. Johnny was quick to grab his team collared shirt, and asked what time he should be at the bus. It was great to have him back in a match today to finish off the season.

In the one and two spots were Eli and Colin.

Eli fired a colorful 39 consisting of 4 pars, 4 bogies, and a birdie. He was one of two winning matches for the Huskies, taking down a familiar foe that has been on the winning end of all his matches against the Huskies usual number one starter, Mark. Eli trailed in the match for one hole, the second. After that, he was on the offense. He took the match up two to the eigth tee and closed out the match on the eigth green.

Colin shot a 6 over 42. He hung in his match as long as he could , but the Gov’s number 2 was on a roll. Colins match was closed out on the sixth, but his willingness to keep grinding, gave him a par on the eigth hole to win the hole in the best ball match. Colin has learned how important that point can be and has bought into the team motto of staying in the match till the very end.

In the three and four spots were Matt and Jaedyn.

Matt continued his steady play by shooting another round in the low 40’s. Matt has been a solid starter all season and today was no different. Unfortunately his opponent went on the offense right from the get go and took control of the match early on.

Jaedyn was the other Husky with a winning match. Jaedyn turned in another impressive round by carding a 5 over 41. He battled back and forth throughout the match to bring it to all square on the ninth tee. After his approach shot missed right, he was faced with a tough up and down from behind a bunker and not much room to work with if he were to attack the pin. He lobbed a wedge up over the trap and landed his ball softly above the hole, with about 8 feet left for par. He drained the putt and made his opponent putt out a two foot downhill slider. His opponent lipped out to record a bogie, earning Jaedyn his first win this season.

In the five and six spots were Ray and Johnny.

Ray has missed some rounds recently due to conflicts in his schedule but that didn’t affect his game today. Ray shot 42 carding 4 pars, 4 bogies and a double. A respectable round for not having had much time on the links.

Johnny started to shake the cobwebs off, but it came a little too late.  Once he started to find his groove, the round was over. That didn’t dampen Johnnys spirits. The smile on his face said it all and that was enough to earn a win in the coach’s book. It was really nice to have Johnny join us today, and I thank him for his positivity and good natured attitude.

In the seven and eight spots were Brody and Jeff.

Brody shot 47 and Jeff shot 50. Both players scorecards had signs of life, but there was just a few too many bad holes than good. As long as they walk off the ninth green smiling, not much else matters to the coach.

It truly has been an honor coaching the Husky golf team. I hope the golfers have learned as much from me, as i have from them. Thank you to the families that have supported the team. Being a sport that has to utilize facilities off campus makes it difficult for the players to have any fan support. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for walking the fairways to watch our matches.
