The Huskies hosted the Holderness Bulls in our long awaited home opener today. The beautiful course we call home, Laconia Country Club, has finally opened their plush fairways to its members and to the New Hampton School varsity golf team. The sky was free of clouds, the sun was shining, and a slight breeeze blew through the course. It was an absolutely perfect day to tee it up.
In the first pairing were co captains Mark and Jack.
Mark faced a different opponent than the last time we played the Bulls. He quickly jumped on top on the card, and held that lead the whole way through. After an opening birdie on the first hole, he set the tone in the match and went about his business. He sprinkled three bogies and five pars over the next eight holes, to post another impressive round of two over par, 38.
Jack also tee’d it up against a different Bull. He faced off against the player that Mark was expecting to see. The Bulls usual number one starter played in the two spot today. Jack matched his co captain with an opening birdie on the first hole, and bookended his round with another birdie on the ninth. In between those birdies, were some bogies, some pars, and a double, to create a colorful scorecard of four over par,40. Jack has an incredible ability to scramble his way around the golf course, and make up and down when its needed most. Unfortunately, his opponent hopped on the par train after taking the lead on the fourth and recorded a two over 38. Jack fell just short after his opponent parred the eighth hole and closed out the match. Together the captains retained 2 points, by winning the best ball match and winning one match.
In the second group was Eli and Colin.
Eli got off to a smooth start by parring the first three holes. So did his opponent. With a bogey on the fourth from Eli and his opponent birdieing the fifth, Eli fell to two down. He got one back on the sixth after a bogey from the Bull, but that was all he was able to gain back before he ran out of holes. Eli took to the ninth tee down one to his opponent, after carding 7 pars and 1 bogey. An errant tee shot on the final hole led him to have to take an unplayable lie and lose a stroke. That was all the Bulls number three needed to close the door. Elis round was nearly blemish free. A bogey and a double, along with seven pars, earned him a very impressive and respectable round of 3 over par,39.
Colin was moved into the four spot today after a late morning scratch from the starter that was slated in the match. He fired off 5 pars and 4 bogies to secure a full point towards the team score. Colins game has been improving with every round. He was two over par after seven holes and was 4 up in the match after 5 holes. 4 up with 4 to play is a great spot to be in when you’re in a match. They halved the sixth hole and that put the match to bed. Colin proved today he is ready to play in whatever spot he is asked to play in, and he can hang there.
In the final group off the tee was Brody and Ben.
Brody and Ben both shot rounds that would normally give their opponents a good match. Today however, the Bulls number five and six starters fired off a 39 and a 40, which was a few too may strokes less than Brody’s 46 and Ben’s 45. Both Huskies turned in scorecards that they should be proud of. From where their scores were in our first practice round, to where they are now, they are showing that if they are given enough chances to get out and play, their scores will start to drop. We’re excited to see what they can do in the next few weeks.
The team will have range and short game practice on Tuesday to get ready for our next match on Wednesday at our home course against Proctor Academy.
