Women's Basketball MVP Brenner '12 Commits to the University of Vermont

New Hampton School has a tradition of producing college-ready women’s basketball players, and another fine player cemented her college destination last week. Samantha Brenner, a rising senior from Nashua, New Hampshire, will take her game to the Green Mountain State in 2012. Brenner committed to the University of Vermont and will sign a letter of intent to secure a basketball scholarship in November.

"I am going to a mid-major school with a high-major coach" Brenner told the NH Notebook. "I will have a chance to play, and my gut feeling is that we will win a lot of games."

Vermont is coached by Lori McBride, who won a national championship with the University of North Carolina as a player in 1994.

Brenner, a 6-foot-3 forward who was the MVP of a Huskies squad that went 16-4 this past season, is excited about making the jump to the college game, but she believes there is work to be done before her fourth and final year at NHS is complete.  With the recruiting game to rest, she can focus on her goal.

“My goal since I was a freshman was to win a New England Championship,” Brenner says, “and we've been so close every year and it's nothing different this season. I think it will be easier because I can just focus on that.”

Brenner was a prized recruit for numerous schools given her ability to score in the post and step out and hit a three-pointer. She says her time at New Hampton has prepared her for the classroom and basketball experience in college.

“I strongly believe that I would not have a Division I college scholarship without going to New Hampton.,” Brenner says. “Darren Redman and Freddy Petkus have promoted me and helped me get my name out there. The resources I have at New Hampton with the gym, workout room, and coaches are unreal and living away from home is something I’m used to now. That is one thing I don't have to worry about when picking a school. Also, I know how to balance a hard academic schedule and a hard basketball workload. I feel like I have gotten the hang of it by going to New Hampton.”
