Winchendon, MA - The New Hampton basketball team went on the road and defeated Class AAA rival Winchendon School, 87-79, in overtime Friday night. New Hampton's triumph at Winchendon was its first during Pete Hutchins' 3 plus years as the coach of the Huskies.
New Hampton bettered its mark to 2-3 on the young season behind 32 points and 10 rebounds from UMASS commit Jordan Laguerre (Manchester, NH). Post graduate Travis Souza (Turlock, CA) scored 16 and grabbed 8 rebounds, including going 10-11 from the free throw line. 2012 point guard Olivier Hanlan (Hull, QC) scored 14 points.
Despite leading for the majority of the game the Huskies found themselves down by five points with 1:49 remaining. With 10 seconds left Laguerre went to the line with his team trailing 67-68. After missing the first, Laguerre connected on the second attempt, which would prove to be the final point of regulation.
Follow a steal Laguerre scored the first points of the OT and the Huskies were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the game. During the OT New Hampton went 12-14 line, with contributions from post graduate Carter Trent (Little Rock, AR), who went 4-4, Souza (5-5), Laguerre (4-4), and post graduate Will Davis (2-4).
The Huskies have a quick turnaround as they welcome Summit Christian Academy to Smith Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The game, which will be the 2010-2011 team's first home game, is scheduled to start at 2:00pm.
