New Hampton School recently honored student Service Learning projects during an all-school meeting. Service is an integral part of an NHS education, and students contribute to their school, the region, and internationally through volunteer efforts and activities.
The Service Learning Program includes community service activities throughout the greater New Hampton area for underclassmen. Activities such as the art clinic and Learn to Skate Program invite local families to the NHS campus to participate in activities led by faculty and students. Other activities involve students helping off campus at places such as the Humane Society in Laconia, NH, and the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH.
Students have helped beautify the roadsides in New Hampton village and maintained local parks, gardens, cemeteries, and neighbors’ homes; provided music, art, and kindness to residents of local nursing homes and the New Hampshire Veterans Home; and cared for animals at the Green Mountain Horse Association, among other activities.
Community service students annually “spring clean” at Camp Mayhew, a camp for at-risk New Hampshire boys, and at Bolduc Park, a public facility on the Gilford-Laconia line.
Director of Service Learning Rosemary Brewster P ’08 said, “When neighbors call for help, the NHS community is there be it painting the town hall, moving furniture, clearing brush, unloading hay, or helping with the NH Marathon.”
Brewster continued, “I am proud of the great work our students and faculty do. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to work together in different settings with the goal of helping others.”
Seniors and postgraduates fulfill their service requirement by completing an independent project, which incorporates at least thirty hours of service for a nonprofit of their choice and a reflective presentation. Midway through the year the Class of 2009 has already logged over 1522 hours of service.
Ross Attardo (Winchester, MA) worked with the “Tenacity” program in Boston, which improves fitness while building academic skills for Boston youth. Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, NH) organized a tennis tournament and raised over $1,000 for “C.O.P.S.” (Concerns of Police Survivors), in memory of his cousin who was killed in the line of duty last year. Jack Selbo (Bridgewater, VT) traveled to Peru with his church youth group and helped build a new church. Molly Moran (Lincoln, NH) completed her third summer volunteering for the Student Conservation Association.
Other inspirational examples include Alex Thrower’s (Potomac, MD) work on behalf of the New Hampton Fire Department (Alex trained as an EMT and has gone out on emergency calls); Luke Horton’s (Meredith, NH) contributions toward his church’s youth and music program; Zak Baskin’s (New York, NY) and Clebreya Parris’s (Brooklyn, NY) leadership of NHS’s annual “Sophomore Expedition” to the White Mountains; and Ellyn Moore’s (Duxbury, MA) volunteer work at a Massachusetts hospital.
