On a day that saw four Huskies sign their National Letter of Intent to play Division I basketball next year the New Hampton School Men's Varsity "A" team played their first home game in front of a packed house at Smith Gymnasium, beating Laurinburg Institute 106-72.

Five Huskies reached double figures.  The balanced attack was led by Nevada-bound Mark McLaughlin (Seattle, WA), who scored 25 points.  Junior forward Evan Smotrycz (Reading, MA) scored 19 points.  Despite playing sparingly in the first half due to foul trouble, Fordham commit Chris Gaston (Jersey City, NJ), scored 15. Damen Bell-Holter (Hydaburg, AK), who signed with Oral Roberts, played in his first game for NHS, scoring 11 points.  Nick Checovich (Hampton, NH) poured in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the three-point line.

New Hampton's only verteran player, Mike Topercer (Phoenix, AZ), teamed with Tulane-bound Jordan Callahan (Marrietta, GA) and Matt Powell (Charlottesville, VA) to control the tempo.  The trio finished with 18 points collectively.  The Huskies also welcomed junior guard Eric Dean (Guliford, NH), who joined the team for the first time after a great fall on the football field.

New Hampton travels to the New Hampshire Technical Institute on Saturday and Sunday to play in a four team tournament with Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, MA), Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, NH), and Rise Academy (Newark, NJ).  The Huskies open up with Notre Dame on Saturday night at 8:00.
