Match #14: NHS – 1, Holderness – 2
On Monday the Huskies hosted league rival Holderness. A victory for New Hampton would have cemented second place in the Lakes Region for the Huskies and given them a hope of catching top of the table Brewster. However, Holderness capitalized on lackluster play form New Hampton and two Husky mistakes in the back to end the first half up 2-0.
After losing two tough games in the past week, it would have been easy for the Huskies to fold their tent. They did not. The second half was a return to the much sharper and more determined New Hampton side of earlier in the season. Senior captain Erin Lanni’s efforts were particularly noteworthy. She moved up to midfield in the second half and was the key to the New Hampton awakening in the second half. Late in the half, Caroline Boyce hammered a well placed shot from well outside the penalty area that beat the Holderness goalie. This gave the Huskies some hope but time ran out before New Hampton could translate the momentum into an advantage on the scoreboard.
The afternoon ended with a Husky loss and confusion in the Lakes Region. Catching Brewster will be difficult and it will be tough fight with foes KUA and Holderness to secure second place. Both are possible, so it will be up to the Huskies to maintain focus and hope.
