Proctor’s Hanna French struck out 15 Husky batters en route to a huge 6-3 Hornet victory over New Hampton on Wednesday. French retired the side on strikes in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 7th innings and did not walk a batter on the day.
Sam Shamberger started in the circle for the Huskies and got roughed up in the bottom of the 3rd for 4 Hornet runs. With 1 gone, Shamberger twice surrendered a walk, and consecutive singles including Katelyn Barton’s bleeder to left that scored 2 runs. New Hampton came roaring back in the top of the 4th as Savannah Norcross singled and stole 2nd. Maryellen Leach doubled her in and Emily Picard drove an 0-1 offering from French over the centerfield fence. Maddie Willingham singled but French got out of the jam by inducing Zola Braswell into an inning-ending double play.
Leach had replaced Shamberger in the 4th and stranded runners on 2nd & 3rd in the home fifth. Proctor’s number 7 hitter Nikki Asch led off the bottom of the 6th with a walk, and after Leach K’d the next two batters, Rachael Simkevich sent Leach’s 1-1 pitch high into the rocks in centerfield giving the Hornets 2 insurance runs.
Picard singled to lead off the Husky 7th, and after an error, New Hampton had runners in 1st & 2nd with nobody out. French took things into her own hands registering 3 consecutive strikeouts.
The loss again drops the Huskies (11-2) into a 3-way tie with Proctor and Tilton for the league lead. New Hampton plays host to KUA on Saturday before facing Holderness at home in the regular season finale on Monday.
