Husky Softball Prevails in 10

Sr. Captain Sam Shamberger ripped a 2-run single to center in the top of the tenth to lift the visiting Huskies to a 7-5 victory over Nobles on Saturday.  It was the season opener for both teams.

The Bulldogs Christy Collins-Pisaro sent the game into extra innings blasting a no-out, 3-run homer in the bottom of the 7th off Maryellen Leach to tie the contest at 5-all.    Leach flushed that event down the drain and proceeded to strike out the side.  Both teams had runners reach 3rd base in the 8th, but neither could push a run across the plate until the New Hampton rally in the 10th.

New Hampton tallied 5 runs in the first two frames.  Lala Ocasio drove the first pitch of the ballgame to center for a single & stole second.  Eva Hodgson walked with both runners advancing on a passed ball and Leach plated both runners with a base hit to left and took second on the throw home.  Freshman Zola Braswell delivered a 1-out single that scored Leach.

In the visitors second Ocasio doubled and scored as Leach’s blasted a home run to right center.  New Hampton would record only two more hits in regulation.  Shamberger started on the mound for the Huskies yielding 3 hits and 4 runs in the second.  Leach came on to pitch in the home 3rd and struck out 13 Bulldog batters.

New Hampton was led by Ocasio and Braswell’s 3 hits.  Emily Picard chipped in with 2 while Leach added a single to go along with the home run.  Braswell was stellar in the field and both Picard and sister Libby turned in defensive gems at second base.

The Huskies travel to Exeter on Wednesday before hosting ISL power St. Paul’s at home on Friday.
