In valiant effort, New Hampton loses to Phillips Exeter on 1st half PK.
The Huskies faced a strong Phillips Exeter Academy on Saturday and came up just short in a hard fought battle. Both teams had good scoring opportunities and both goalkeepers came up with huge saves on either end of the pitch.
Near the midpoint of the first half, Exeter found themselves with a corner kick on the far side. As the ball swung in and was cleared out of the box, the referees whistle rang loudly and he quickly pointed to the penalty spot for an off the ball challenge by a Husky defender. New Hampton keeper Henrik Barbin dove to his left, but had to watch helplessly as the ball was slotted into the opposite corner of the net.
New Hampton continued to pressure, nearly equaling the scoreline minutes before half time. A Guthrie Little throw in was flicked on a met by the on-rushing boot of Garrett Bolton, but a diving Exeter goalie was able to get a hand to the ball and push it wide.
The Huskies came out hard at the start of the second half. Play moved quickly around the pitch for the final 45 minutes with both teams coming close to scoring. With time winding down, New Hampton pushed hard for the equalizer and had several good chances with Dom Thomas volleying just over the crossbar, Nate Lamprey missing inches wide off a shot across the goalmouth, and Nico Albrecht seeing his looping volley from outside the box fall into the hands of a leaping PEA keeper.
As New Hampton pushed up the field, Exeter were able to catch them on the counter and had several scoring chances of their own, but Barbin was up to the task and quick off his line to stuff several shots, collect through balls, and make two tremendous saves on point blank shots. Barbin finished the game with 12 saves.
New Hampton play Lakes Region rival Tilton School in their next match.
