Huskies Rally to Defeat Wyverns 37 - 21

Patrick DeBenedictis
The New Hampton football team came back from behind to defeat Kingswood-Oxford in a tough road game.
The Huskies traveled to Hartford, Conecticut to play the Wyverns of Kingswood-Oxford School. The Wyvern's started the game by unleashing a ferocious air attack led by quarterback Sam Capadoce and receiver Jeffery Davis Jr. By the middle of the 2nd quarter, they will have connected for three touchdown passes.  Momentum seemed to all be in Kingswood's favor as the Huskies struggled to get anything going offensively. New Hampton, however, refused to succumb to defeat. Coach Ladd made some keen strategic adjustments that enabled the Husky defense to shut down Kingswood’s offense. Coach Kiley tweaked the offense as well and found ways to get senior running back, Ky'Juon Butler opportunities to display his talents. Things began to improve for the Huskies late in the second quarter, following a Marcus Peterson interception. That drive would lead to a Butler 2-yard touchdown run. Following another defensive stand, the Wyverns would snap the ball over the head of their punter, setting the Huskies up with great field position with 40 seconds left in the half. The Huskies would capitalize as Butler would scamper into the end zone to bring New Hampton within 7 points of the lead at halftime. The tide was turning.
The second half would be all Huskies. The defense led by Butler and Junior linebacker Thomas McNeal stifled the Wyvern offense. Butler would then punish the Kingswood defense with his powerful and determined running style. He would score another short rushing touchdown in the third quarter to tie the game at 21. Minutes later junior running back Jacob McKerley would give the Huskies their first lead in the game, scoring on a two-yard run. Butler had a number of jaw-dropping rushes in the game, but he saved his best for last. Late in the third quarter, the Wyvern defense seemed to have the Huskies stopped. Butler, a Hartford native was cheered on by friends and family in attendance, took take it upon himself to put the game firmly in New Hampton's grasp. He broke through the line of scrimmage, breaking numerous tackles and running over a half-dozen Wyvern defenders on his way to a 41-yard touchdown run. He would finish the game with a herculean 310 yards on 38 carries. Senior David Henriquez would set up the final scoring opportunity with a magnificent 48-yard punt that left the beleaguered Wyvern offense on their own 1-yard line. Two plays later a bad snap caused Capadoce to have to fall on the ball in his own end zone for a Husky safety. The kicking game was near perfect as Cam Devlin was a perfect 5 for 5 in PAT attempts.
The victory marked the greatest comeback of Coach Kiley’s coaching tenure and perhaps the greatest in Husky history. The boys showed an incredible amount of grit to bounce back from what was a disastrous beginning. The 2 - 0 Huskies hope to continue their winning ways as they host the Ravens of Portsmouth Abbey School next Friday, October 4th, on Kennedy field at 4:30 pm.
