Huskies Beat Bears in Home Opener

Patrick DeBenedictis
New Hampton prevails on Kennedy Field in the first game of the season against Berkshire School.
New Hampton began the 2019 campaign on an unseasonably warm afternoon against a very talented Berkshire team. The Huskies got out to a 14 - 0 lead in the first quarter behind some crisp offensive execution. Senior quarterback Nick Bailey connected with Marcus Peterson for a 15-yard touchdown reception. Ky’Juon Butler would score a few minutes later on a 27-yard touchdown run. New Hampton had a chance to go up three scores but fumbled on the two-yard line. Both teams would remain scoreless for the rest of the half as the defenses of both teams took over the game.
In the third quarter, the Bears marched the ball down the field to score their first and only touchdown. They would convert the two-point conversion to bring the game within 6 points. The Huskies would extend it to 12 later in the quarter when Ky'Juon Butler ran over Berkshire defenders in a 19-yard touchdown run. Butler would add the exclamation point in the 4th quarter after he stripped Berkshire's quarterback of the football and returned the fumble 57-yards for his third touchdown of the afternoon.
New Hampton's defense executed Coach Ladd's scheme with aplomb. They were led by senior defensive tackle David Henriquez with 18 tackles a sack and 2 tackles for loss. Senior linebacker, Thomas Evans would add 17 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss. A huge 4th quarter interception was made by junior safety Duece Wilson. The Athletic Trainers had a busy afternoon dealing with numerous heat-related injuries on both sides. Attrition forced the coaching staff to make numerous personnel changes. Young players stepped up to continue the pressure on Berkshire and keep them out of the endzone. The Huskies travel to Hartford, Connecticut to play Kingswood-Oxford School next Saturday.
