Huskies Battle With Holderness for a Lakes Region Win

The New Hampton home opener was rescheduled from last week to today, and the Huskies faced off against rival school Holderness in a late afternoon match. The day started cold, and the course was still wet from a very unforgiving spring. However, the sun eventually broke through and the conditions improved. With little time to warm up, the Huskies had no choice but to trust their game and play.

Newman (1) shot the team low of 38 and won his match early. Coan (2) struggled in the wet conditions and faced a Holderness opponent who could not miss from short range. He clawed his way back from a slow start and four down to the last hole, but unfortunately was unable to split the match on the last hole when his opponent hit a clutch midrange putt. Bone (3) played well throughout the round, trading holes with his opponent. With the match all square on hole 9, Bone hit a big par putt to secure both his match and the team best ball. Liang (4) won his match before the final holes but double bogeyed the last 2 holes to shoot a 43. Joughin (5) took his match to the final hole up one but dropped it after lipping out a 15-foot putt, unfortunately splitting the match. Burwell (6) played consistent golf through the course of her round, closing the match on the eighth hole and winning the match a total of 4 up.

Team lows were Newman at 38, Joughin at 41, and Bone at 42.

Shout out to Coach Burns for his moving pregame speech, which played no small part in the team's success.

The Huskies play again tomorrow at Laconia in a rematch against Proctor Academy.
