Huskies Come Up Short Against KUA

Tonight, the New Hampton Huskies are playing their third game in a row against a top five ranked Prep School opponent as they face-off against #2 ranked, Kimball Union Academy, for the second time in a week. The game started off at a furious pace, both teams ready to play and knowing exactly what to expect from one another. During the first five minutes, New Hampton was the team with more offensive zone time. Then, just past the six minute mark, in the span of fifteen seconds, Kimball Union Academy scored two times, taking the wind out of the Huskies sails. The last eleven minutes of the period saw no goals, but the ice was tilted in the other direction, with Kimball Union Academy spending the majority of those eleven minutes in New Hampton’s zone. The second period started off like the first left off, with Kimball Union carrying the pace of place. That all changed just under five minutes in, when Ryan Mahlmeister scored to bring the Huskies within one. Mahlmeister picked off a D to D pass just inside the offensive blueline and went in all alone on a breakaway. On the breakaway, Mahlmeister made a nice pump fake before bringing the puck to his backhand and then sliding the puck between the Kimball Union Academy goaltenders’ legs. Two and a half minutes later, it was another individual effort that tied the game up for the Huskies. Dunlap stole the puck from a Kimball Union Academy defender around the hash marks by the boards and then drove the net, making a nice move to freeze the Kimball Union Academy goaltender, before tucking the puck just inside the post. The two quick goals revived New Hampton and now they were the team controlling the pace of the game. During the next eight minutes, the Huskies created a couple really nice scoring chances, coming extremely close to taking the lead. However, it was Kimball Union Academy that scored with just under three minutes left in the period, to take a 3-2 leading heading into the second intermission. New Hampton took a penalty right before the end of the second period, putting them on the penalty kill at the start of the third period. Kimball Union Academy took advantage of their power play opportunity, scoring a minute into the third period. Down by two with seventeen minutes to go in the game, New Hampton still had plenty of time to come back in the game. During the next fifteen minutes, the Huskies worked extremely hard to draw within one, but were unable to break though the Kimball Union Academy defense. Kimball Union Academy added an empty net goal with around a minute left in the game to defeat New Hampton, 5-2. Matt Sayles was solid once again in net for the Huskies stopping 26 of the 30 shots he faced. Although the Huskies have lost their last three games, there are many positives that they can come away with. New Hampton battled hard against two of the top five teams in Prep School Hockey and could have easily won all three of those games, if a couple bounces went in their favor. The Huskies now know they can compete with the best teams in Prep School Hockey and will take that confidence with them in their last games of the regular season. New Hampton travels to Vermont Academy on Wednesday with a chance to clinch a Lakes Region playoff spot on the line.
