Huskies Win It In Overtime!

Coming off a big win against St. Paul’s on Wednesday, it will be important for New Hampton to stay focused tonight and not to look past Winchendon, a team who is much better than their record shows. The game couldn’t have started better for the Huskies. Jack Ring scored two minutes into the game, giving New Hampton the early lead. Alec Grace carried the puck into the Winchendon zone, drawing a defenseman to him, before making a nice pass to Ring in the slot. Ring caught the pass and fired the puck in the top shelf. Five minutes later, it was Ring scoring his second of the game to give the Huskies a two goal lead. This time James Hatzepetros lead the rush into the Winchendon zone and found Ring alone ounce again in the slot. Ring fired his shot low to the blocker side, just high enough to beat the Winchendon goaltender over the pad. Three minutes later, Max Fleckenstein scored off a nice play by Jalen Wand to put New Hampton up by three. After scoring three goals in the first ten minutes, the Huskies let off the gas and let Winchendon back into the game. New Hampton allowed Winchendon to score two goals before the end of the period, leaving the score 3-2 in the Huskies favor after the first period of play. The two goals Winchendon scored at the end of the first period, gave them momentum to start the second period. Winchendon scored two times in the first five minutes to take a 4-3 lead over New Hampton. Winchendon’s fourth goal finally woke the Huskies up out of their slumber and they started to take back control of the game. After not having a shot in the first five minutes, New Hampton started to get pucks deep and create offensive off cycling the puck down low. With six minutes left in the period, Jake Dunlap tied the game up for the Huskies. Steven Ardagna turned the puck quickly up to Isaac MacLeod, who then made a cross ice pass to Jake Dunlap, just outside the offensive blueline, caught Winchendon off-guard. Dunlap walked in all alone and fired a shot short side just inside the post. The rest of the period saw New Hampton continue to control the pace of the game but were unable to score the go ahead goal. After two periods of play, things were all knotted up at four. The first ten minutes of the third period, saw back and forth action with both teams working hard to try and take the lead. Just past the ten minute mark, the hard work of the Huskies lead to a power play. On the power play, New Hampton worked the puck around until Marcus Joughin passed it up to Jake Dunlap at the point. Dunlap walked to the middle of the ice and fired a nice low shot on net. The Winchendon goal kicked out Dunlap’s shot to the harsh marks, Isaac MacLeod corralled the rebound and fired the puck past a sprawling Winchendon goaltender, to give the Huskies a one goal lead with six minutes remaining. New Hampton’s lead did not last long however, Winchendon scored forty seconds later to tie the game at five. The rest of the period saw lots of action but no goals, sending the game into overtime. A minute into overtime, the Huskies turned the puck up ice quickly to create a two-on-one from the red line. In desperation, a Winchendon player took a plenty to deny New Hampton their scoring chance, giving the Huskies a chance to win the game on the power play. A minute into the power play, Jake Dunlap point shot won the game for New Hampton. Isaac MacLeod got in fast on the dump-in, creating a turnover behind the Winchendon net. Cory Morris picked up the puck and fed it to Marcus Joughin oh the half wall, who quickly passed up to Dunlap at the point. Dunlap took two steps across the blueline and then ripped a slap-shot far side just over the Winchendon goaltender’s pad and in the back of the net. The Huskies showed great character after giving away their early lead, to come back and beat Winchendon. Matt Sayles was great coming in relief, make several big stops down the stretch and stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced. New Hampton has a big test in front of them tomorrow as they travel to the Meriden, NH to take on the #2 ranked team in Prep School Hockey, Kimball Union Academy.
