Huskies Hold Off Holderness

Tonight’s matchup between New Hampton and Holderness is a big game for both teams. The Huskies are just above Holderness in the RPI ranking that determines the tournament seeding at the end of the year and just above Holderness in the race to make Lakes Region Playoffs. Tonight, New Hampton came ready to play, taking control of the game right from the start of the game. The Huskies won the opening faceoff, got the puck deep and went to work on the forecheck. Just over two minutes into the game, Jake Dunlap scored to give New Hampton the early lead. Dunlap scored a rebound off of James Hatzepetros’s point shot. After scoring the Huskies got a little complacent and allowed Holderness to tie the game a minute later. Again, it took a response from another team to wake New Hampton back up. Two minutes later Alec Grace scored on the power player to help the Huskies take back the lead. Adam Shuchart ripped a shot from the blueline that hit Greg Peterson in front. After Shuchart’s shot deflected off Peterson it hit a Holderness play and then bounce right to Grace, who was crashing the net. Grace one-timed the bouncing puck past a sprawling Holderness goaltender to score. The next ten minutes saw New Hampton pound shots at the Holderness goaltender but were unable to extend their lead. Finally, with two minutes left in the period, the Huskies were able to get another goal past the Holderness net minder. Cale DuBrul chipped a puck out of the New Hampton zone and Jake Dunlap out raced a Holderness player to the puck in the neutral zone and went in on a breakaway. Dunlap made a nice move on the breakaway but hit the goalpost after beating the Holderness goaltender. Marcus Joughin was following up the play and chipped the puck into the empty net, after Dunlap’s miss, for the Huskies third goal of the game. New Hampton came out of the first period with a 3-1 lead and outshot Holderness, 25-5. The second period started out just like the first; with the Huskies swarming Holderness all over the ice and creating several offensive opportunities. Just before the sixth minute mark, Duke Litwin scored his third goal of the season to give New Hampton a three goal lead. Alec Grace picked the puck up on the board around the harsh mark area in the offensive zone, drove the net only to get denied. Duke Litwin who was also crashing the net found the rebound and jammed it through the Holderness goaltender’s legs. After going up 4-1, the Huskies again became a little complacent, allowing to Holderness to score before the end of the period. Up 4-2 and controlling most the game, all New Hampton needed to do was continuing playing similar hard work hockey and they would come out with a win. The first ten minutes were going exactly how the Huskies wanted. They were getting pucks deep and not allowing Holderness much offensively. Then with a little more than five minutes to go in the game, New Hampton got sloppy on the power play and gave up a shorthanded goal to Holderness. Only up a goal with five minutes to go, New Hampton clamped down defensively and Matt Sayles made some key saves to help the Huskies earn a 4-3 win. Although the score of the game was a little too close for comfort, the Huskies dominated most of the game outshooting Holderness 58-23. New Hampton will look to stay on the winning path as they travel to play Brewster Academy tomorrow afternoon.
