Huskies Defeat Brewster

The game originally scheduled for Saturday night was rescheduled to today, due to the storm that blew through New England over the weekend. New Hampton will look to take the positives out of the win against Vermont Academy as they take on another Lakes Region opponent in Brewster Academy. For the first time in a while, it was the Huskies that took the early lead, scoring just over a minute into the game. Cory Morris took a big hit behind the New Hampton net to get the puck to Ryan Mahlmeister along the board at the defensive zone hashmarks. Mahlmeister hit Max Fleckenstein, who was coming across to support, with a pass at the blueline. After receiving Mahlmeister’s pass Fleckenstein cut back to the right side of the ice, went wide around a Brewster defenseman and find a shot far side off the post and in. The Huskies lead did not last long, Brewster scored a minute later to tie the game at one. Four minutes later, New Hampton took back their lead. James Hatzepetros kept the puck in at the blueline, skated the puck down the wall, went around a Brewster player before feeding Alec Grace in front of the net. Grace one-timed the puck between the Brewster goaltender’s legs for the Huskies second goal. A minute later on the power play, Jake Dunlap gave New Hampton a two goal lead. Greg Peterson got in hard on the forecheck and caused a turnover in the Brewster zone, Cory Morris picked up the puck, skated around the net and fed Jake Dunlap backdoor for the goal. The next seven minutes saw back and forth action from both Brewster and New Hampton. With three minutes remaining in the period, Brewster scored to draw within one. The Huskies came out strong to start the second period, controlling the pace of the game and creating several quality scoring chances. The dominate play of the Huskies caused Brewster to take a couple penalties. Just over seven minutes into the period, New Hampton was able to take advantage of a power play. Nice puck movement between Adam Shuchart and Marcus Joughin resulted in setting up Isaac MacLeod for a one-time goal from the slot. Five minutes later, Brewster responded with a power play goal of their own. Despite controlling the play for most of the two periods, New Hampton was only leading Brewster by a goal. The Huskies came out a little slow to start the third period and Brewster was able to capitalize. Eight minutes in to the period, Brewster scored to tie the game at four. The goal by Brewster must have woke up the Huskies, because ten seconds later they drew a penalty. On the ensuing power play, Alec Grace scored his second of the game to give New Hampton back the lead. The rest of the period, New Hampton played solid defense and Lucas Brine stopped any puck that came in his direction to come away with a 5-4 win. The Huskies found a way to win tonight but will need to have an improved effort on Wednesday, when top 5 ranked, Tilton, visits Jacobson Arena.
