Slow Start Does Huskies In Against Stanstead

New Hampton is looking to bounce back from two tough losses in this afternoon’s game against Stanstead College. The Huskies will have their work cut out for them today, Stanstead is not an easy opponent and they too are looking for revenge, coming off a tough loss last night. For the third time in the past three games, the Huskies got off to a slow start, getting into penalty trouble early, allowing Stanstead to score 2 power play goals and add an even strength goal during the first period. Trailing 3-0 after the first period of play, New Hampton needed to find a way to reverse the tide. In the second period, the Huskies just worked on doing the little things; making smart simple plays, looking to get pucks deep and get in on the forecheck. Getting back to basics, New Hampton started to create some chance and cause Stanstead to take a couple penalties. The Huskies very easily could have scored twice on the power play, created two beautiful plays. The first play, every New Hampton player touched the puck within five seconds before a pass was sent back door for an open net. Unfortunately, the Huskies were unable to convert on the play. The second play was some nice one touch passing that lead to another backdoor open net, this time the Huskies player ripped a shot that the Stanstead goaltender came out of nowhere to make a sprawling save. Unable to capitalize on their chances, the Huskies remained down 3-0 after two periods of play. Four minutes into the third period, New Hampton was finally able to take advantage of a power play. Steven Ardagna ripped a shot from the point that Jack Ring tipped on net. The Stanstead goaltender made the save on Ring’s tip, but the puck rebounded out to Isaac MacLeod on the doorstep and he banged in his 11^th goal of the year. After MacLeod’s goal, all the momentum swung in New Hampton’s favor and they worked hard to score again. The Huskies were unable to score as time ticked away and Stanstead scored an empty net goal to defeat New Hampton 4-1. The Huskies will have some time to work on their game in the next couple days, as they do not play until Friday, when they take on Vermont Academy with important Lakes Region points on the line.
