Huskies Fall Short Against Dexter

This afternoon New Hampton takes on the #10 ranked team in Prep School Hockey, Dexter School. The Huskies and Dexter have had some great, close games over the past couple years, with multiple games needing overtime to decide a winner. New Hampton was not ready for the speed of Dexter at the start of the game and played with a little too much respect in the first period. Despite not playing their best hockey in the first period, the Huskies only allowed Dexter to score once, mainly due to the strong play of Lucas Brine. Brine made several key saves during the period, stopping 14 of 15 shots, to keep the Huskies in the game. To start the second period, Dexter scored twice in the first two minutes to take a 3-0 lead on New Hampton. The Huskies did not panic after going down by three and gradually started to string some shifts together in Dexter’s zone. The offensive pressure from New Hampton caused Dexter to take some penalties, putting the Huskies on the power play. Just past the seven minute mark of the period, Isaac MacLeod scored on the power play to cut Dexter’s lead to two. Jack Ring and Marcus Joughin set up MacLeod for his goal. Three minutes later, Greg Peterson scored an unassisted power play goal to bring New Hampton back within one. The final eight minutes of the second period, saw back and forth action, with both teams looking for the critical next goal. Neither team was able to score before the end of the second period, leaving the Huskies down a goal heading into the third period. Four minutes into the third period, Dexter capitalized off a New Hampton mistake to extend their lead to two. Five minutes later, Isaac MacLeod responded for the Huskies, scoring his second goal of the game after picking off a pass in the offensive zone and ripping a wrist shot from the top of the circles that went bar down. With half the period remaining, the Huskies down one and gaining momentum, it looked as if it was only a matter of time before they would score the tying goal. Four minutes left in the period, New Hampton came close to tying the game, shooting just high on an empty net opportunity. Two minutes after the Huskies missed an opportunity to tie the game, an unfortunate bounce off a defensive zone faceoff lead to Dexter scoring to go back up by two. Dexter added an empty net goal before the end of the game to defeat the Huskies 6-3. New Hampton will have little time to dwell on this afternoon’s loss, as they take on another strong opponent in, Stanstead College, tomorrow afternoon at home.
