Huskies Offense Comes Alive In Win Over Holderness

The New Hampton Huskies look to get back on the winning track as they traveled a couple exits north on I-93 to take on Lakes Region Rival, Holderness School. The Huskies will be looking to get off to a fast start tonight, not only because they want to take control of the game early, but to try and stay warm to endure the frigid temperature of tonight’s outdoor game. The game started off well for the New Hampton, they got back to playing simple hockey, making smart easy plays, getting pucks deep and working hard to get in on the forecheck. The Huskies dominated the play throughout the first period, outshooting Holderness 15-7, but still struggled to get on the board offensively. After the first period of play, both teams remained deadlocked at zero. Two minutes into the second period, Jack Ring broke the tie, putting home a rebound that James Hatzepetros and Greg Peterson assisted on. A minute and a half later, New Hampton added to their lead with a power play goal by Greg Peterson. Adam Shuchart had the puck at the point, walked to the middle of the ice, drawing at Holderness player with him before passing to Alec Grace on the half wall. With a Holderness defender putting pressure on Grace, Grace slide the puck to Peterson, who was in the corner. Peterson walked out of the corner, fired a shot high that was denied, but Peterson followed up his shot and knocked the rebound out of mid-air to put the Huskies up by two. Four minutes later, it was Peterson scoring his second of the game to put New Hampton up by three. Peterson got the puck from Quinn McClelland and Alec Grace just before the red line, made a move right at the blueline, lost the puck for a second before recovering it and ripping a shot top corner. After going up by three, the Huskies relaxed a little bit and got careless in their own zone, allowing Holderness to score just past the ten minute mark. New Hampton did not allow Holderness to get any momentum off their goal, responded twenty seconds later to take back their three goal lead. James Hatzepetros scored the Huskies fourth goal. The hard work of Greg Peterson and Jack Ring got Hatzepetros the puck at the point. Hatzepetros corralled the pass and took one step to the middle before ripping a nice hard wrist shot through Alec Grace’s screen, to score top corner. After a strong second period, New Hampton went into the intermission up 4-1 on Holderness. To start the third period, the Huskies did not let off the gas, continuing to dominate the play. Seven minutes into the period, Greg Peterson completed his hattrick and put New Hampton up by four. Steven Ardagna threw a shot on net that Peterson grabbed before the puck could make it to the net and then tucked it around a sprawling Holderness goaltender. Peterson was not done yet, scoring his second power play goal and fourth goal of the game two minutes later. Peterson fourth goal came on a two on one with Cory Morris. Morris had the puck as they entered the zone, fired a shot on net that the Holderness goaltender stopped, but the rebound came right back to Morris, who passed across to Peterson for a wide open empty net tap in. A minute and a half after going up by five, Holderness scored to make the score 6-2. Again, less than a minute later New Hampton responded by scoring, to take back their five goal lead. This time it was Ryan Mahlmeister’s turn to score. Davis Bone picked off a pass in the offensive zone and fed Mahlmeister all alone in front of the net. Mahlmeister made a nice little move before tucking the puck between the Holderness goaltender’s legs. The Huskies were not done yet, Adam Shuchart scored his second goal of the season with six minutes left in the game. On the power play, Shuchart picked off a Holderness clearing attempt and then ripped a shot top corner to give New Hampton the 8-2 win. Matt Sayles played great in net, stopping a couple breakaways in the third period and making 22 saves for his third win of the season. The Huskies will look to build off this effort as they traveled to play another Lakes Region rival, Proctor Academy, on Wednesday.
