Huskies Dominate in Tie Against Millbrook

The New Hampton Huskies finished the Belmont Hill/Nichols Holiday Tournament against the same team they played to finish the Brooks/Pingree Tournament; Millbrook School. Both teams battled hard in a game that remained tied after three periods and two overtimes, needing a shootout that went 12 players deep to be decided. The Huskies will be looking to get revenge for that shootout loss they suffered less than two weeks ago. The game started at a furious pace, both teams flying up and down the ice, looking to create offense chances. Five minutes into the period, it was Millbrook that took the early lead over New Hampton. The game continued to see back and forth action for the next eight minutes. With just under two minutes remaining in the period, Ryan Mahlmeister got the Huskies on the board. Mahlmeister received a pass in the neutral zone, was by himself with two defensemen back for Millbrook. At the offensive zone blue line, Mahlmeister shot between the Millbrook defensemen and then skated around them to pick up his own rebound, before sliding it between the Millbrook goaltender’s legs, tying the game at one. The scored did not stay tied for long, as Millbrook took their lead back a minute later, leaving the Huskies down a goal after the first period of place. Just over two minutes into the second period, Millbrook extended their lead to 3-1, scoring on the power play. After Millbrook’s third goal, New Hampton started to take over the game. The Huskies were flying all over the ice, playing great team hockey and peppering the Millbrook goalie with shots, coming just shy of scoring multiple times. Finally, with three minutes left in the second period and on the power play, Greg Peterson found the back of the net for New Hampton. Peterson, picked the put up on the boards just below the hash marks, beat his defender to the net and sniped short-side top corner to bring the Huskies within one, heading into the second intermission. Despite coming out strong to start the third period, Millbrook was able to capitalize on a New Hampton mistake four minutes into the period, to go back up by two goals. Millbrook’s goal only made the Huskies that much more determined to get back into the game. The Huskies scored two goals in the next thirty-five seconds to tie the game at four. Twenty seconds after Millbrook scored, Marcus Joughin scored New Hampton’s third goal of the game. Joughin received a pass in the neutral zone, picked up some speed and at the offensive blueline made a strong move to the outside to go around a Millbrook defender. After beating the Millbrook defender, Joughin cut to the net and put the puck far side top shelf to bring the Huskies within one. Fifteen seconds later, Cory Morris tied the game for New Hampton. After Joughin’s goal, the Huskies won the center ice face-off and put the puck deep. Marcus Joughin and Isaac MacLeod got in on the puck hard, causing a turnover. MacLeod picked up the turnover and found Cory Morris all alone in front of the net. Morris made no mistake one-timing MacLeod’s pass, past the Millbrook goaltender. With the game tied at four and ten minutes left in the game, New Hampton looked to be in total control, only a matter of time before they would score the go ahead goal. The Huskies worked hard to end the game before regulation time, but the Millbrook goaltender found a way to keep New Hampton off the board, before the end of the period. Tied at four a piece, New Hampton and Millbrook found themselves in a familiar position, heading to overtime again to determine a winner. In overtime, the Huskies dominated the play, outshooting Millbrook 9 – 0, but just couldn’t seem to beat the Millbrook goaltender. Since, this game was not the championship, the game ended in a 4-4 tie between New Hampton and Millbrook. The Huskies played their best game of the tournament, outshooting Millbrook 57 – 23. Matt Sayles was good in net, stopping 19 of the 23 shots he faced and making several key saves when New Hampton needed them. The Huskies will go their separate ways to celebrate the New Year before coming back to campus on January 2nd to start preparing for their away game against Governor’s Academy on January 5th. The New Hampton Huskies would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and looking forward to a great second half of the season!
